The history of graffiti, or the art of drawing images or words on walls, can be traced all the way back to early civilizations when our earliest ancestors began proscribing important information on cave walls. These usually took the form of crude images that represented some sort of cultural expression as to how their societies operated. Later, in ancient Greek and Roman culture, citizens took to the streets in protest. They would write their names or brief paragraphs expressing their displeasure with the ruling class on walls throughout the city, publicly making their grievances known to their fellow citizens.

Today’s graffiti, otherwise known as “urban art” or “street art”, can be traced back over 50 years to the 1960s when it first began appearing in the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia. It gradually became popular in other big cities and eventually found a permanent home in New York as well as most other urban areas. Today, It can be found all over the world as street artists display their creative outlet on blank concrete and brick canvases everywhere. Beautiful murals and expressions of cultural shifts are prominently displayed in large metropolitan areas around the globe. Many of these are bright, colorful, engaging, and professionally produced. Street artists have created some of the most captivating works of outdoor art that have turned once bland, dull industrial and commercial structures into must-see tourist attractions.
