We're very proud that our work on the Airbus Wing Integration Centre's strong wall and floor project has been shortlisted for a Concrete Society Award. Thanks to the careful planning of our structural engineering experts, the 1,500 cubic metres of concrete required to create the floor were successfully poured over a 24-hour period. Congratulations to everyone involved!
The Centre was designed to test wings from the world’s largest commercial aircraft. The structural elements we designed needed to provide a flexible solution that would enable Airbus to conduct a wide range of testing arrangements over the next 25-30 years.
The resulting modular wall and floor structure is unique, capable of testing Airbus’ suite of commercial aircraft wings in multiple configurations. The ‘strong wall’ and ‘strong floor’ were designed to the highest execution class - usually reserved for buildings like nuclear testing plants – and can withstand the high strength of modern aircraft. This is important, because wings can be tested up to failure, and this can release enough energy to register as seismic activity.
An intricate level of detailed design, fabrication and checking of every structural element was vital to meeting all these challenges successfully. Our team’s design of a pre-stressed anchor system also saved the client a huge amount of money, as they didn’t need to use an equivalent system from a third party.

The structural elements we designed needed to provide a flexible solution that would enable Airbus to conduct a wide range of testing arrangements over the next 25-30 years. They also needed to be capable of providing the data that Airbus needs to demonstrate value and effectiveness to its clients.
