And just like that two rooms become one! 18’ long load-bearing wall removed along with a couple wing walls. This has completely changed the way this house looks and functions. If you scroll to the right you can watch the process of removing the wall. First it was stripped on both sides, then temp walls put in place on either side of the load bearing wall to support the joists above. Next the wall itself was removed along with the HVAC and other surprises inside of it. The the joist ends were all cut to allow the new LVL beams to sit inside the the bay to provide as much head room as possible. Next the LVLs were put into place using joist hangers and 4” @grkfasteners R4 screws. Then the 6x6 posts were installed under the new LVL beam using gigantic @strongtie beam connectors and the 3 layers of the 14” wide LVL were bolted together using 5/8” through-bolts since I couldn’t get the engineer to sign off on RSS screws Finally the temp walls were removed to officially open the space up. This went seemlessly and I couldn’t be more pleased with the process. Shoutout to @jeffreymilby_ for giving me an extra set of hands for a few days. Now I get to finish installing this T+G glue floor and drywall/paint. Ever installed a tongue and groove glue floor? It’s a laborious task. Especially if the product isn’t 100% straight and perfect. And it never is. So that’s the reason for the painters tape. Since there is no locking mechanism like other floating floors the tongues must have a special adhesive applied before assembly. It’s pretty rime consuming but if you skip these steps you’ll end up with a lot of gaps in the field and lose square quickly too. At least the homeowners won’t need to worry about moisture traveling through the slab since they opted for two coats of PU280 in addition to the padded underlayment recommended by @shawfloors. Once the glue dries and I pull all the tape, I’ll post another photo to show the completed product. Yes I prefer to do solid unfinished hardwood but it doesn’t always make sense for every client so rather than turning away the work I like to keep my sword of skills sharp and do the best install possible.
