“I'm always astonished by a forest. It makes me realise that the fantasy of nature is much larger than my own fantasy. I still have things to learn.” - Gunter Grass
.
My heart fills almost to breaking with the beauty of nature, the magic of it, the ancient power of it. I have no idea why we don’t all feel this way, it astounds me.

Found some beautiful oyster mushrooms on my forest walk. An interesting fact about oyster mushrooms, they will eat through garbage such as wood, paper, coffee grounds and petroleum products; making them a wonderful species to study for pollution control.

Magic Mushroom Growing on Paul Stamets’s Boat
I thoroughly washed my boat and a few days later, this mushroom popped out: the psilocybin-active Gymnopilus luteofolius!
And there is evidence of other boats sporting this magic mushroom. This supports the concept that boats are vectors transporting mushroom species over the seas. How many species from Europe and Asia came to North America via boats? Since pilgrim times, after landing, wooden boats would be deconstructed to recycle the timbers and wood for constructing houses, secretly establishing a mycelial “colony” of magic mushrooms unbeknownst to the occupiers.
This is yet another way fungi cleverly take advantage of human migration.
I have had this video for a few years but hesitated to post it until the boat departed off my property into parts unknown.
Please see my book Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World (Ten Speed Press) for more information on this and related species.
Crazy. Bizarre. Interesting. Fun.

I’ve been feeling some kind of way about Instagram lately and I don’t like it. It’s a combination of feeling obligated and unworthy which I KNOW is an obvious contradiction, but my brain is nothing if not great at ignoring common sense.
.
I started this account for community; I felt quite alone in my path, as I have often been alone in life, sometimes by necessity, more often by choice, and felt it would be nice to connect in some small way; of course I could never have hoped to meet so many beautiful people, to have their art grace my home and my body, to have them support my own fledgling endeavours, to learn, discover new twists and turns in my path in the ways that I have, and I am so bloody grateful.... but.
.
I like to take pictures of stuff I find, stuff I make, where I am and what I read. I don’t have great knowledge to share; I am not and will never be a teacher. I don’t spend ANY amount of time planning posts or photo shoots or how my feed should look. I don’t promote anything and don’t want to... but I ask you, as I ask myself; is this enough?

Fellow Earthlings
Great to share some good news. Today, my OpEd in the New York Times was published: “Will Mushrooms be Magic for Threatened Bees”
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/28/opinion/bees-threats-crop-loss-mushrooms.html (Please cut and paste into a browser.) .
This discovery represents the beginning of a paradigm shift supporting biodiversity = biosecurity. And that natural products can offer a broader bioshield of benefits than pure pharmaceuticals... Applied mycology offers actionable solutions to many of the environmental challenges we face today. The field of mycology is under-funded, under-recognized, and under-utilized. .
.
Please join the mycological revolution. Together, we can do a world of good. After all, we have a beautiful planet to save.
Stay tuned for further updates. We have much more to share. Thanks for your continued support which is much needed and appreciated.
Respect !

This bizarre but common mushroom is known as the Split Gill Polypore, Schizophyllum commune. A polypore with forking gills (!), this species has been consumed for hundreds if not thousands of years. When ingesting the mushrooms or the mycelia, your immune system is up-regulated, partially attributable to a heavy molecular weight, exopolysaccharide beta glucan, uniquely named schizophyllan, having a mass of more than 400,000 daltons. Such large sugars can’t make it into your bloodstream but activate an immune response in your gut and intestines.
Schizophyllum commune is a basidiomycetous fungus growing in both deciduous and coniferous forests from the tropics to temperate zones.
So common but So bizarre! This is why:
This species has more than 23,000 mating types (Obviously humans have two genetically compatible mating types - male and female). What does this mean ? For one spore to find a mate, proximity is an advantage; distance decidedly is not! I do not know of any other species that has so many mating types.
Also, I would guess that unknown to 99+% of mycologists is that when tons of mycelium of this species are grown within a laboratory, the mycelium, en masse, out-gasses an intensely sweet perfume-like, fragrance that is almost overwhelming to smell but idiosyncratic, i.e. species-specific only to S. commune.
I wonder if these volatile scents attract specific insects? What is its molecular structure? What other properties are hidden within fragrances? Are these mycoflavonoids?
Young mycologists - please explore, this mind ponders the possibilities but does not know the answers. You could.
Forward.
