My girl WOULD catch the Muggle sickness (upper respiratory infection) right before a week of Disney visits. #butyoudontlooksick #restday . At least she had her personal healthcare companions to help her get through it! . These are the moments we live for as a team: for my girl to feel safe enough to be her 100% authentic self in every situation. For us, this is the biggest benefit that outweighs ALL costs of having a service dog. . ‍♂️ABOUT MY BARK ALERTS: . Did you know I have a bark alert? It is a common misconception that service dogs do not bark at all ever but that is simply not true! Bark alerts can be applied to a variety of tasks including alerting the public to its handler in danger. I’m not *that* cool though. . How we use it: I let out a single bork in the direction of my girl, then I make stern eye contact with her. This means “You need to get to a safe/quiet place to sit down ASAP or your body will do something disabling that is out of your general control!” When I do this my girl knows she must shift her attention to check in with her body/mind and adjust accordingly. I performed this alert twice yesterday at Epcot! . 1st instance was at the aquarium during a break when she was just on the brink of feeling extremely nauseated with low blood pressure wondering if it would worsen. It did. But because of my assurance she was able to take an anti-nausea med before it was too late. Too late meaning spending the day at Disney with her head in the . . 2nd time was when her heart rate began to race with anxious adrenaline while standing under Test Track’s noisy overpass. I began to mitigate this by blocking her backside and leaning against the backs of her knees. We call that task “watch my back.” It helped her stay composed on the outside but ultimately wasn’t enough. The VROOOMM noise constantly going over our heads while she was trying to think was too much and I knew it! As her heart started thumping harder I knew she had to get out of there.
