Today on March 6th 1836, Mexican forces finally break through the walls of the Alamo Fort after thirteen days of intense fighting. ••••• The Siege of the Alamo was a major battle during the Texas War of Independence from Mexico. The Alamo was an abandoned mission located in present day San Antonio, Texas. In the 1700’s, Spanish settlers established a nearby mission and garrison in area. The troops stationed there had nicknamed the mission “El Alamo”, the Spanish word referring to the surrounding cottonwood trees. In late 1835, Texas initiated a war of independence from Mexico. A small group of Texan volunteers captured the Alamo from Mexico and were under the command of Colonel James Bowie and Lieutenant Colonel William Travis. They had been ordered to abandon the fort because of insufficient troops and supplies, but refused to leave. ••••• The Texans dug in and prepared for an attack. Even with limited reinforcements, they never numbered above 200 men. A force of approximately 3,000 Mexicans marched towards the Alamo (though estimates widely range). They immediately besieged the fort and were under the command of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The Mexicans launched two major assaults over the course of thirteen days and were miraculously repelled each time. However on the morning of March 6, they launched a third attack and successfully broke thought a breach in the outer wall. The Mexicans quickly overpowered the exhausted defenders. ••••• Santa Anna ordered his men to take no prisoners and only a handful of Texans survived. The battle has since become so famous because of their bravery and limited survivors. In the following month, Texas had their revenge by defeating Mexico near San Jacinto (modern day Houston). The Texan soldiers shouted ‘Remember the Alamo’ as they charged into battle. Shortly after, Texas went on to gain their independence, but were annexed by the United States less than ten years later. Millions of tourists now visit the Alamo Museum every year. The battle still remains as a major source of pride for Texas.
