*Cloud Classification School* Let's classify this cloud together. ⁣⠀⁣⠀ ⁣⠀⁣⠀ Figuring out the cloud type, a layer cloud (stratus) might come to mind. But these clouds are puffy. Because they're layered puffs, this happens to be a really good example of altocumulus clouds of the stratiformis species (horizontal layer). They're not very close to the ground to be stratocumulus, but they're not high enough and the puffs aren't small enough to be cirrocumulus. ✅⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ Of the nine cloud varieties, altocumulus clouds are associated with 7 of them. They aren't multilayered (duplicatus), they don't have holes in them (lacunosus), and you probably wouldn't classify them as opacus or translucidus because the cloud layer isn't particularly thick or thin. The radiatus cloud variety doesn't match up either. But this happens to be a really good example of the perlucidus cloud variety due to the cracks of blue sky in between the cloud heaps. And the clouds are lined on the left side of the image, making them a slight candidate for the cloud variety undulatus, though maybe not the best example I've ever seen. ✅⁣ ⁣⠀ Altocumulus clouds can be associated with five supplementary features: asperitas, cavum, fluctus, mamma, and virga. But there aren't any of these features apparent in this photo. ✅⁣ ⁣⠀ Putting all the pieces together, you’d classify this cloud as ‘altocumulus stratiformis perlucidus undulatus’. Caught a mild form of asperitas clouds a week ago while on a hike. A few interesting cloud specimens at sunset. ⠀⠀ The cloud in the foreground (the one shaped like the Starship Enterprise ) has some smooth edges and some lens-shaped features, making it an example of the cloud species 'lenticularis'.
