⁣WRITING TIP WEDNESDAY// Writing deadlines.⁣ ⁣ ⬇⬇⬇⬇⬇⬇⁣ ⁣ I gave myself to the end of May to finish revising my plot. ⁣ ⁣ For a long time, I struggled with the idea of self-imposed deadlines, worried that it would stifle my creativity. ⁣ ⁣ As a recovering perfectionist, I still tend to get bogged down in the details. While this quality can be helpful (at times), it is also extremely counter-productive and paralyzing.⁣ ⁣ After a lot of trial and error, I realized that I needed to join in on the delicate dance of providing the space and time needed for my creative process, yet drawing the line at a certain point to move the story forward. ⁣ ⁣ Balancing the two hasn't been easy, but for a recovering perfectionist, giving myself a deadline has helped to ease some of the writing anxiety I've encountered. If you have experienced or can relate to any of the above, I recommend giving self-imposed deadlines a go! ⏳⁣ ⁣ A gentle reminder: A deadline should be realistic and work within the confines of your life. After a week of pastries and pizza, I’m back at work today. For those of you who didn’t know, Science On A Postcard isn’t my full time gig! I work as a Researcher at the University of Aberdeen’s Health Services Research Unit, where I work on improving the way we do clinical trials. I love my job because it’s incredibly varied, no 2 days are ever the same ☺️ Today has so far included: working on 2 grant proposals, lots of work on getting datasets together for the next phase of the project that I’m leading, figuring out communications plans for another project, and addressing edits on a paper I’m writing from my PhD.
