Stand up, dust your knees and save yourself

There are many myths and mistruths out there about motherhood. But one of the most lovely ones to disprove is this whole notion that teenagers are terrible, horrible, no good, very bad creatures. and that for a few years (while she was overtaken by a mysterious, terrifying alien being) we would endlessly fight and she would break rules and rebel and we were to mostly hate each other. ⁣ ⁣ Especially if (shudder) that teenager was a girl. I'm told all the time that the girl variety of teenager is the absolute worst. ⁣ ⁣ I just got back from five days in California with this kid, my firstborn, after attending an intense seminar on the structure of story. We did ten-hour days of listening and taking notes and took in more information than my brain could hold. 14 hours together in the car. A tiny shared Airbnb room, and five whole days of complete togetherness.I can truly say that I enjoyed her company the entire time. ⁣ Isabella (or Bella or Izzy, depending on who you are) is brilliant and funny and sarcastic as hell. She's entertaining and will debate anything. And I like her. ⁣ ⁣ Yeah, after all her years of protest, it makes me damn happy that she is no longer fighting the fact that she, too, is a writer. To share my love of words and story with this kid and to have the ability to share an experience like this weekend with her...well, it's kinda a mother's dream come true. ⁣ ⁣ I don't just love this kid. I like her. I really like her. Yeah, we butt heads and scream at each other and sometimes she drives me over the edge and pushes me against my very last limit. And sometimes I do the same to her. But I am damn proud of this human I helped create, in ways I probably don't even have the right to be. ⁣ ⁣ Because as much as she might look like me, or love writing like I do, she is wholly her own person. Always has been and always will be. I wouldn't have it any other way. ⁣ ⁣
