Reposted from @c.t.productions Yesterday we announced that two of our photos have been Highly Commended in the Siena International Drone Awards 2019 @sipacontest - we thought it might be fun to show some behind the scenes footage of how these shots came about. When on assignment in Antarctica this year our collegue and kayak guide @brandon_payne_sa alerted us to a minke whale who was playfully swimming under kayakers. We launched our drone and watched this mesmerising moment. We waited for 3 or 4 minutes until the whale and kayakers naturally formed an interesting composition and then instantly switched from video to stills mode to create the photograph in our previous post. Fortunately the beautiful blue sky day illuminated the yellow kayaks against the crystal clear water, showing the size and grace of the minke whale. Working with both video and stills simultaneously while a scene like this unfolds in front of you can be challenging and exhausting but hugely rewarding if you manage to capture the beauty of the moment. A day we will never forget. It’s mid-winter now on the Antarctic Peninsula where I took this photo in Paradise Harbor last January. We know from the study of migration patterns of distinct humpback whale populations that this whale will be in its mating and feeding grounds in tropical waters off the coast of South America at the moment. And it will in all likelihood be back in the same Antarctic area to feed next southern summer. Being able to observe killer whales hunt truly is a fascinating privelige. As we entered the Peninsula, we encountered a pod of seven orcas hunting. They are intelligent, employing teamwork tactics to capture their prey. For example, while a few of them approach unsuspecting seals sitting on an iceberg and tip the iceberg, the others will await the seals and catch them as they slide off.
