Alfred Street Residence - The previous addition had a lower ceiling than the original Victorian house so we widened the connection to this volume through a functional book wall that provided a portal framed entrance into the new kitchen + dining area. . MELBOURNE | I found myself in Balaclava over the weekend, a part of Melbourne that I rarely visit. You know, being a northsider and all. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I quite enjoyed walking along bustling Carlisle Street, admiring the architecture a seeing what interesting restaurants, bars, cafes and shops were around.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ One thing that caught my eye in particular was the Art Deco building on the left of my photo. Inside is a restaurant called @ilonastallerbalaclava (which actually looks quite decent), but I was curious to know more about the building itself. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I've been able to ascertain that it was originally a @commbank branch, and then a @redrooster_au, but not much more than that. ⁣⁣ ⁣ As for that ship artwork on the overpass, it's The Lady of St Kilda, a schooner which served from 1834 before being shipwrecked off Tahiti shortly after 1843. It was moored in Melbourne in 1840 and is where the Melbourne suburb of St Kilda got its name from. ⚓⁣ ⁣⁣ Do any of you know any more about the history of this building? Crazy pave progressing at our Reservoir project

MELBOURNE | Melbourne's @thecapitolrmit is one of the city's many gorgeous historic theatres. It recently reopened after undergoing a significant restoration over the past five years. ⁣ ⁣ The theatre, one of the earliest examples of Art Deco architecture in the world, was designed by Chicago architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin, most famously known for designing Canberra. ️⁣ ⁣ Most know about Walter, but Marion was an accomplished architect in her own right. In fact, she was the first woman to obtain an architecture licence in Illinois. ‍⁣ ⁣ Inside, the theatre is famous for its illuminated geometric ceiling, consisting of over 4,000 individual lightbulbs. Unfortunately only the upper level remains as the lower level and street foyer were replaced with a shopping arcade in 1964, which was a compromise that saved the entire building from demolition. ⁣ ⁣ The full theatre was so grand that it was considered one of the finest theatres in the world. Many consider that it would be @unesco heritage listed were the 1964 modifications not made. Thankfully the first level is still intact and looking wonderful post renovations. The 12 story Chicago style Art Deco tower above it is also quite beautiful. ⁣ ⁣ With all of the tram traffic on Swanston Street I was never going to get the clear shot that I wanted, but when these two trams framed the entrance like this, after a few minutes of waiting, it was perfect. ⁣ ⁣ I saw @iamwandasykes perform here in 2012 as part of the @melbcomedyfestival, and she was fantastically hilarious.
