. 127 Hours is a fascinating true life survival story, based on canyoneer Aron Ralston autobiography, ingeniously titled “Between a Rock and a Hard Place”. . Aron (James Franco) is an overconfident and cocky outdoorsy explorer type. We see him leave home in the morning without answering a call from his mother. Telling no-one where he’s going. Out climbing canyons in the Utah desert, tragedy happens. He slips, falls and is left trapped by a boulder. Even though I feel that Aron is presented as a character falling on the right side of sympathetic the whole thing almost feels like a punishment for his arrogance. . 127 Hours is a beautifully crafted film. It’s so not how I remember it. Not simply a one-location film. Through visualization of Arons thoughts/dreams/hallucinations we get to know him. Traveling back in time to his childhood home and to cherished and not so cherished moments spent together with his girlfriend. . Sun, wind and water - it’s such a tactile film. An attack on ones senses. It almost feels like some kind of VR experience. Danny Boyle and his team has really used all the tools in the toolbox to make this a spectacular film. Slow-mo, fast forward, all imaginable and unimaginable shooting angles, effective use of graphics and split-screen. It’s so creatively shot, directed and edited.
