Day 40+41 Angkor Archeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. These remains are gigantic compared to the old ruins in Greece! Then again it is the largest religious complex in the world. More limestone was used to build the Angkor complex than the pyramids in Egypt. Angkor was the center of the Khmer empire from the 9th until the 15th century. It once was the biggest city in the world, with more than one million inhabitants. The temples have been both Hindu and Buddhist. Several temples are still in use by Buddhist monks. We only did the three “obligatory” sites: Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom (with Bayon and its 216 smiling faces) and Ta Phrom (famous from “Tomb Raider” 2001). Some of us even saw the sunrise today and were ready by Angkor Wat by 05:30!! I love the desert and endless sunshine, but Fall is the one season I miss the most. However, I think the only thing harder than not having seasons is adjusting to opposite seasons! I never did get used to Christmas in summer when we lived in New Zealand. It’s like everything good in life is packed into a few months, then without the holiday festivities winter is just cold and meh. But we did love taking advantage of beautiful winter landscapes like this incredible Hooker Valley Trail. It is one of my favorite hikes in New Zealand!
