Here is our Summer 2019 bucket list! My friend Kate, @communication.blooms inspired me to create one for our family and we are so excited about it! ☀️
.
My family loves to be outside, but with temperatures close to 100 most of the time during the summer here in Orlando, it seems too hot to do much of anything! I like that most of these activities can be done indoors or have water involved if they are outdoors. We plan on hanging this on our refrigerator so we can plan a few things to do each week.
.
Have you ever made a summer bucket list? Local friends, is there anything else we should add?!

My face when I woke up today and realized it's the first Tuesday in a while that I haven't pressed snooze 79 times, dragged my grumpy butt out of bed, and rushed to get ready in 7 minutes before heading off to work. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Instead, I get to CREATE for a living! I truly enjoy the creative process and felt so lucky waking up this morning knowing this was my "new normal"... at least for a little while. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
While I'm going to miss my job SO MUCH I'm trying to focus on all the positives that being able to work on my business comes with. ➡️ And there's a lot! ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
So thanks for being here, thanks for your support, and thanks for making this corner of the internet so dang positive. I appreciate you.
I’m ALMOST finished!

Organizing all the closet things takes soooo much time. I still have to grab a few more of those disposable lunch containers so I can finish the job. They’re great for stacking all the kids’ scissors, markers, windup toys, craft sticks, etc.
Then I’ll label everything, nice and neat!
I’m really glad I tackled this job because I’ll be able to start my school year feeling like I know exactly where EVERYTHING is!
So just to let you know, the school bus boxes are from @reallygoodstuff . I love them for holding light things like rolls of Velcro, but anything heavier, you’re better off getting plastic containers.
Also, definitely go to the Dollar Stores for small containers (for separating drawer/shelf stuff like pens, markers, etc.) because you can get really decent stuff for a dollar.
I’m grabbing some lunch in a minute, but I promise to post the monthly labels for the big bins later tonight for anyone who wants to get organized this summer!

Motor Planning Monday
.
Repetitive speech practice is key for building new neural pathways in children with motor planning struggles. But repetitive speech practice can be BORING. So, how do SLPs make something intrinsically not fun, fun? Answer...we embed repetition into play! You see...contrary to popular belief, pediatric SLPs don’t just play all day. What we do, and we do very well, is we play with a PURPOSE. For children with apraxia of speech, our play revolves around the principles of motor learning
•
I’ve been an SLP for over 20 years and this is still one of my favorite activities for repetitive speech practice. The more pieces of Velcro food...the better this activity becomes..
•
Step 1: repetition of the CVC word “cut” which is motorically challenging because of the movement from back of the tongue to tongue tip (watch out for assimilation to “tut”) - be sure to cut every piece of food multiple times before moving to the next step
.
Step 2: add the pronoun “I” to increase the complexity of the movement demands - “I cut” .
.
Step 3: add the food name and the function word “the” (no telegraphic speech today!) which requires the child to motor plan multiple movements since most of the foods are 2 and 3- syllable words - “cut the tomato, cut the potato, cut the pepper” (note: if the child does not have the voiced /th/ sound in his repertoire, substitute the /d/ sound so that the child is saying “cut da pepper” - this is verbal shaping and is often necessary in order to move language forward despite the speech motor planning struggles)
.
Step 4: add the color name to increase the complexity of the utterance - “cut the brown potato”
.
Step 5: finally, add the pronoun to make it a complete sentence - “I cut the brown potato”
•
Note: I store my food, plastic knives, and small cutting board in a picnic basket to complete the food theme! You can also add a small gingham tablecloth and some stuffed animals to create a speech therapy picnic! .

That or when a kid asks me what I like to do for fun... ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
I swear I feel this at the start of every summer! Inevitably, I push aside my hobbies towards the end of the school year.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
I swear after spring break I develop this mindset of just surviving until summer and putting all of my hobbies and goals on hold until then. ♀️ Anybody else do this?! ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
It's definitely a bad habit that I should work on changing. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Because of this, by the time summer hits, I'm burned out and tired from the school year. AND, I've spent so long just surviving that I'm not even sure what to do with this extra time!⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Today, I wrote down a mini list of priorities for my summer. They are:⠀⠀
Read (for fun and for work!)⠀⠀
Spend time in nature (hiking, kayaking, hanging in my tree swing, eating dinner on my deck)⠀⠀
Declutter and organize around my house⠀⠀
Improve my diet⠀⠀
Finish 2 new resources⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Do you have summer priorities or things you'd like to spend more time on this summer? ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Please share!! ➡️ I'd sincerely love more ideas and I'm sure there's other SLPs who feel the same way!
My SLP story Part 2...
So in my last post, I had just graduated with my Bachelors degree in Speech Pathology/Audiology. That’s where there’s another curve in the road.
I decided I wanted to take a break from school and work in an office (mostly so I could wear cute clothes). Then I’d get my masters degree. I took a 19 year detour.
I worked as a mall marketing director, got married, moved to Canada, started a marketing company, and exhibited my artwork.
But something was missing.
I wanted more connection.
I wanted to feel like I was really making a difference.
I volunteered for a year as a classroom aid to get experience. I worked as an SLPA. I moved back to Arizona and worked as an SLT full-time while I got my masters degree online.
It was a very long road. During this time, my sweet husband passed away and I almost went bankrupt from the medical bills. Working on my masters degree gave me something positive to look forward to.
✅
In 2013 I got my masters degree and I keep moving forward. Being an SLP, I get the connection I was looking for. Nothing beats the feeling of knowing that at the end of each day, I’ve helped someone.
So now you know my story. It wasn’t always easy but it has been totally worth it.
This pronoun book is one of my go-to activities when I want something quick, interactive, and fun to work on pronouns! My kids LOVE interactive books so I always try to use them to target as many goals as I can! I use this one for:
Identifying pronouns
Labeling pronouns
Simple sentences (he has it, she has it)
Label and identify food Following directions
.
Do you use interactive books? This one is FREE!
