10 year old Finn has got his hair coloured for Autism Awareness Day today - to support his brother who has Autism. There is a write up in the news paper about Finns continued love and support for his brother who lives with Autism and Finn is also writing a book ! Today is #AutismAwarenessDay . Proud to be on the spectrum! And no, autism (as well as ADHD, ADD, Tourette’s, OCD, ODD etc) is not a “gift”. For most it is an endless fight against schools, workplaces and bullies. But under the right circumstances, given the right adjustments it CAN be a superpower. I’ve had my fair share of depressions, alienation, anxiety and disorders. But without my diagnosis, I would never have started school striking. Because then I would have been like everyone else. Our societies need to change, and we need people who think outside the box and we need to start taking care of each other. And embrace our differences. #aspiepower #autism

It’s the start of Autism Awareness Month, and thanks to these two amazing boys, I’m definitely now autism aware When Jude was born nearly 11 years ago, and followed by Tommy 3 years later, I never could have predicted how life would turn out. Autism can affect how a person communicates, and as yet neither Jude or Tommy are verbal. Life is difficult for them every day, trying to make their needs and wants understood. There’s been sensory challenges, a severe lack of sleep, self harming, and meltdowns I never would have believed possible. The difficulties they have mean they both need 1-1 care, and as they struggle so much around each other, now live apart. Me and their mum look after one boy each and swap every couple of days, ensuring both of them get exactly what they need. But through it all I’ve been blessed with two very special boys. Jude, who’s smile lights up any room. His loving and gentle nature captivates everyone he meets. Jude’s anxiety and self-harming have meant he went through an incredibly tough few years, but I’m delighted to say we seem to be on the other side of that. There is light at the end of the tunnel, and he’s now almost a completely different child. Tommy is the cheekiest kid I’ve ever met, with the strongest will power as well. Much more logical than his brother, his puzzle making abilities, how he manages to make sense out of the chaos he creates, wows me every time. Right now he’s the one going through a difficult patch. I’m sure further diagnosis will follow (something that is also quite common when it comes to autism) and when it does we’ll find the right ways to help the world become an easier place for him to be happy in. Thanks to these two boys they’ve made me into ten times the man I was before they came into my life. The way they battle against all of their challenges each day inspires me to do better, to be better, to be the dad that they need. And thanks to them, they’ve made me want to write about their lives. To do more than just raise awareness about autism, but to educate, to learn more myself, and try to make the world a better place for them to grow up in. Hopefully our stories will help achieve that ❤️
