In the net you have to expect the unexpected! Weird bounces for example... you have to be able to clear floating pucks from the danger area around your net. Pucks out of reach of your gloves should be swatted away as quick as possible if there are no other options and opponents are near
In this sequence we do just that. A little paddle-eye coordination is always a good way to end a reaction practice
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who has the most sealed RVH of them all? We use a mirror to help our goalies find their holes and adjust them instantly.
(It is a mirror like fabric on a wooden frame, not a conventional mirror for easier and safer handling on the ice.)
If you don’t have access to a mirror you can use the reflection off the boards if your rink allows it.
Knowing exactly where your posts are is critical. Stopping on your post is especially important when getting into a reverse position but is also useful when you have to quickly get squared up for a play closer to the net. Knowing exactly where to hit the post will prevent you from rotating out, over sliding or sliding into the net. In this sequence we practice finding the post and then sliding back into a set position. This drill helps your spatial awareness around your posts and also works on your explosiveness getting out from the post position

Awesome clip of former student Marco Bührer explaining some physics behind goaltending and showing off his favorite tool to keep his reactions sharp.
Marco is one of the most successful Swiss goaltenders of all time: four time Swiss champion and national team goalie with numerous world championship and Olympic appearances. He is one of the most humble and hardest working athletes we ever had the pleasure to work with. Even towards the end of his career, he constantly looked for ways to improve and get better every day! So no matter how much success you have, you have to keep working hard every day
PS1: make sure you watch til the end to see Marco’s intensity in warmups!
PS2: check out his awesome old school Hasek-style helmet
