Today is Cétshamhain (first of summer) and the Wheel has turned again in its everlasting spin, marking half-way between Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice. Stemming from ancient ritual practices that celebrated fertility in a world where observing the cycles of Nature was crucial for survival, today we gain wisdom and nourishment from this time even in a world that is now prevalently detached from our primordial, wild nature. Some of us may not personally grow crops for living anymore, but our minds and bodies will always be tuned to the rhythm of the seasons, no matter what sort of lifestyle we are having nowadays. As much as Beltane is bringing fertility to the soil, it is also bringing fertility to the soul. We are now fully awaken and flourishing after winter slumber and the turning of the Wheel supports our need for active, creative, fulfilled life - a fertile, fruitful living. Large bonfires that were purifying and cleansing on the Beltane eve in the past continue to be so as the Old Ways are rapidly finding their way back into today's society. Kilkenny Druid’s Grove The stone figure in the center of this courtyard is a triskele. It is one of the oldest Celtic and pre-Celtic designs, dating back to at least 5000 years ago at Newgrange. The triskele is used to represent the sun, triadic gods, and the three realms of land, sea and sky. Today is one of my favorite days of the year! Swipe for glimpses of my Bealtaine rituals. In ancient times, from sundown on April 30th to sundown on May 1st marked the Celtic fire festival of Bealtaine (Irish, pronounced Bee-Yowl-tinneh or Bal-tin-eh depending on dialect, anglicized to Beltane or Beltaine). The rituals tied to this day are meant to welcome the lighter, warmer half of the year and involve protective charms, setting intentions, taking stock of resources, fertility celebrations, fortune telling and other forms of divination, and sun and fire worship. On this day, flowers, bright colors, and general merriment take over as the earth resumes its verdant dance once more. How perfect that these floral cookies made by @loriastern arrived in the mail yesterday, a surprise birthday gift from the lovely @dreamlike_woods. I’ve spent my Bealtaine morning admiring their beauty and enjoying their delicious taste, while taking advantage of the day’s thin veil with an elaborate tarot reading, in which my favorite card, The High Priestess, made a favorable appearance. I’ve also incorporated @sister_spinster’s Flora Potion, a flower essence for “connecting to abundant and divine nourishment”, consisting of anemone, wild iris, foxglove, rose, elderflower, lady’s mantle, belladonna lily, apple, and olive. With intentions set and gratitude in place, I welcome the sacred energies and abundance of this next half of the year. Blessed Bealtaine to you all! A personal side quest for me on this upcoming trip to Ireland is focusing on plants. Not to forage/harvest, but just to observe them, connect with them.
