Pysical Hunger versus Emotional Hunger.
Pysical hunger is
Satisfied by eating something.
Builds gradually.
Makes us irritable - which is relieved by eating.
Occurs after time has passed since your last meal or snack.
We also have taste hunger, which is a sensation that you want to eat something because you like the taste of it.
This is usually satisfied by having a couple of mouthfuls of say a nut butter, a little of something you fancy a much larger amount of food to satisfy a craving then you might be looking at emotional hunger.
Emotional hunger.
Not feeling satisfied completely by food or you feel as though you need more food.
Creates very specific cravings.
Has no Pysical cues.
Occurs shortly after your last meal or snack.
If you have identified that you are not 100% Physically hungry that it is not taste hunger and no amount of the food choices out have made then you are experiencing emotional hunger. The tricky part is is identifying what you are feeling. This can be tough especially if your used to eating your emotions and trying to stuff them did instead of feeling them
Ask yourself if the emotional you are feeling is related to your desire to eat or an emotional trigger that you have yet to overcome.
Triggers come in the form of
Abandonment-food is always there it’s a reliable constant in your life.
Anxiety-using food to calm nerves.
Commiseration-I deserve this because I had a shitty day.
Fear-food is comforting and soothing.
Emptiness -food helps to fill the void you feel.
Inadequate-food helps you fill the void you feel.
Joy-food is celebration.
Pride-I earned this treat.
Loneliness-food acts as a friend.
Sadness-comfort foods can make you feel happy in the short term. Carbohydrates give you a serotonin boost.
Reward-I work play hard
Feelings are there to be experienced not solved. Learn to sit with your emotions and recognise that you do not have to act on them they are merely communicating with you.
Keep a mental note of which type of habit you do without realising, as self awareness leads to to self correction which over time changes those ingrained habits into positive habits.
