Mykonos has been a favorite of ours, and each time we go - the more we love it (even with the hiked taxes, I’ll get to that soon). Mykonos is an island in the Cyclades group in the Aegean Sea. It's popularly known for its summer party atmosphere. Beaches such as Paradise and Super Paradise have bars that blare thumping music. Massive dance clubs attract world-renowned DJs and typically stay open well past dawn. June, July, and August are peak months. June being some what laidback, and the next couple of months being a bit crazy. I recommend renting a car or 4-wheeler before getting there in July and August, because you will NOT find any available and you will be missing out in a lot of exploration. The island itself looks like a barren desert with white houses looking out to the ocean. There are multitudes of beaches, some that are reachable by buses and water shuttles. Mykonos is sometimes compared to Ibiza, but they are pretty different. Even though they are both party islands, Mykonos seems to still have an authenticity that Ibiza lost decades ago and turned into a party marketing machine. In the evenings visitors are elegantly dressed and go to the maze of restaurants and other establishments. Restaurant food is actually fairly cheap if you know where to look. Many of the water front restaurants are actually much cheaper than the ones 30 seconds around the corner and back into the maze, so keep an eye on those menus - and the quality is still good and very fresh! Mykonos has gotten pretty expensive over the years. Due to Greece’s economic problems, tourism has been heavily taxed in the last few years - and in the last 6 years, I’ve seen the cost of drinks on the island double and sometimes triple. Along with saving your receipts and trying to get the VAT back, one big recommendation is to buy your Alcohol in Athens if you are taking the ferry or the Duty Free in the airport. The bottles sold in the island grocery stores are grossly overpriced as well, so hitting up the liquor store before leaving for the islands is a wise idea. I’ll post more tips on Mykonos in future Mykonos posts… This is getting way too long. ✈️

Lets talk about Paris for a second. Lol It truly is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Also, I don’t think I have ever had such a heavenly baguette with melted cheeses and meats in my entire life, and it only cost me 3 euros. I have been there twice, and in spite of a couple negative experiences that I’ve heard echoed over and over from other travelers on blogs, I’m not even going to get into it ( unless you want me to). lol I will give you a couple of tips, however: . Learn a little French. Any at all goes a long way, trust me on that. . Knowing a local WILL give you wings - this goes for anywhere, and I made it a point to do that from then on forward. On my second trip there, I actually knew someone and helped me see Paris through a different lens, I even ate cheaper and better food and drank better wine. If you don’t know anyone, there are meet up activities and Couchsurfing.com events that you can attend where you can meet others in the city - and this goes for most cities as well. Note: After the Paris bombings the Eiffel Tower is not as accessible as before. Before one was able to drink wine and picnic on the lawn. Now, there are gates up and military personnel guarding it. When I went Two years ago, they did not allow backpacks - I don’t know if that changed. Safe travels!

Last summer was my second time in Athens and my second time at the Acropolis. I don’t know how I missed all of the different trails around the site the first time, but it was quite an interesting exploration with dozens of little discoveries and new views of the beautiful city. We got an excellent deal for a two bedroom apartment by Victoria Square, downtown - 40 bucks a night for the three of us. It has a large Afghan immigrant and refugee community and it reminded me of our convoys through the city plazas in Afghanistan. The park is full of family, friends, and children playing all day and through the early part of the night, so it was pretty interesting to experience that side of Athens. Safety wise, I never felt it was unsafe - but we were three males walking together, so I can’t say more than to practice common sense to my fellow female travelers or any traveler, really. It was a walking distance to everything, however, so we never took the metro. The posh neighborhoods surround the acropolis with something for everyone, specially to eat-out and having a night out with your friends. I definitely recommend giving Athens a at least a few days to take in the culture, sights, and sounds - you won’t regret it!
