There are days that you know, in the moment you are living them, that they will be memorable for all your life. Today was one of these days. Alex's grandfather was born in Bolnisi, a former German village in Georgia which was founded by German colonists in 1818. These communities were invited by Katharina the Great to come to Russia. Born in 1927, the grandpa spent his childhood in this amazing country, before being deported in 1941 to Kazakhstan, guilty, as many of other Germans living in Russia simply for their nationality and therefore apparent connections to the Nazi regime of Hitler. After days of researchs and trying to contact people through many channels (yes, Facebook work indeed ), we managed to reconnect the dots and meet with some of the kindest people of the municipality of Bolnisi. We arrived without expectations and once there, the surprise: not only they found on the city register of 1939 the greatgrandfather's name, but also they could tell us where they lived. A local TV channel, enthusiastic about our story, came along to document the discovery :) There are no words that can describe the feeling of entering the house of your grandpa, in a country which is far away from the homeland but still so close with meanings and memories. Although the house got burnt and some rests remain, the vineyards, the blue sky and the peaceful atmosphere made us understand why grandpa described these places as magic. Parts of Bolnisi still look like a German village would look like 50 years ago: its architecture reminds the German presence in every corner. Another piece of the family puzzle got rediscovered.
