So I picked up the following three books at Sunday’s Berkeley Comic Con. I didn’t get it from a dealer booth. I had worked out a trade with my fellow comic hunter extraordinaire, @itcamefromthebasement prior to the show. At our last SF Comic League Comics Swap, he mentioned that his favorite EC Pre-code horror book was Vault of Horror 30, the one with the severed arm hanging in the train. I had a copy that I was willing to trade. In return I received Hulk 271 (1982) in 9.6, first app of Rocket Racoon in regular comics, Marvel Super-Heroes Winter Special (1991) first appearance of Squirrel Girl, and Shazam 28 (1977), first appearance of Black Adam since the Golden Age. Swipe for individual books. Last pic is the raw copy I traded away. So the show was a success for me before the doors even opened. I got three key first appearances and Israel got a rare HTF GA book for his collection. No cash or money changed hands. We both got great stuff and were happy with the trade. In fact, Israel was the first local comic collector I met through IG that I did a trade with a few years ago. We congratulate each other on nice scores from our comic hunting adventures and let each other know of events or opportunities to check out. That’s how we do it it in the SF Bay Area, we work together more than we compete. I truly enjoy being part of the IG comic community and especially the tight SF Bay Area comic family. For #wolverinewednesday I’m going with the Uncanny X-Men 98 (1976) with a classic Sentinels story by Chris Claremont and illustrated by Dave Cockrum. This issue is the first to reveal that Wolverine's claws are a part of his body and not a weapon attached to his gloves. Also a bunch of first appearances of certain Sentinels and cameos of reporters named Clark and Lois. The story contains a meta-reference in which two men (Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in unnamed cameos) observe Scott and Jean together and remark how "this never happened when WE were running things!" I think I picked this copy up at the ID10T Festival at Shoreline Amphitheater a few years ago. It was the brainchild of Chris Hardwick that combined live music, Weezer headlined, comedy comics and art! Something my wife and I could enjoy together. I wish the event would come back. I scored a few nice issues of this run at great prices there. My biggest regret though, was not purchasing a ASM 129 GCG 9.6 for $500 at one of the booths.
