HAPPY WINTER SOLSTICE 2018’ Today marks the shortest, darkest day and longest night of the year. May your darkness be filled with deep rest, replenishment, and healing. This day also signals the return of the light, as the sun gently and slowly increases, swinging the pendulum back toward summer solstice. ~ WINTER SOLSTICE TEA: Nourishing, Relaxing, and Rejuvenating = perfect for today (and many other days). ~ Mix the following dried herbs: 1 handful burdock root, 1 handful dandelion root, 1 handful lemon balm, 1 handful oatstraw, ½ handful rose hips, and a pinch of anise hyssop, licorice and cinnamon. ~ Place one handful of the herb mixture (gently crushed right before use) in a quart-size glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Slowly pour in boiling water until jar is full. Cap tightly and let steep for 3–4 hours. Drink up to 3 cups throughout the day. Yields 4 batches, about 4 1/3 quarts of infusion. ~ A wonderful alterative, burdock gently and effectively supports us toward improved health. This weedy biennial of the Asteraceae family is most famous for its burrs (as shown in our illustration), but the first year fall root is what we typically consume for food and medicine (even though its bitter seeds are also used medicinally). Great #burdock cordage. I’ve used this #wild #plant for many things, friction fire spindle, medicine, tannins from the root, food, leaves to wrap fish for fire cooking, velcro from seeds, etc. but I was unaware of its ability to use as #cordage until I saw @wur_thaz_smoke post it. Burdock root is high in inulin with many sources citing a total of 45-50% in the fresh root. Inulin (not to be confused with insulin) is a starchy carbohydrate that is indigestible to humans but provides nutrients for the gut flora.
