The Superwoman origin story goes, more or less, like this: Superman started saving the world. Then he saved Superwoman. And, then, Superwoman went on to save the world, multiple times—all while strutting in sassy red boots and remaining perfectly coiffed. So, it’s basically a tale of a woman who was saved by a dude and then went right into saving everyone else. Never complaining. Never missing a beat. Is that truly who you want to be, what you want to strive for?!! ⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ I don’t. Her narrative is all about saving everyone else; in essence, dropping anything and even putting her own well-being in danger at the slightest suggestion that she is needed. Sure, she performs incredible feats, but who she is and how she feels is largely a mystery. ⠀⁣ ⁣ In real life that plays out like this: Being all things to all people means you are nothing to yourself. And therein lies the real danger. ⠀⁣ ⁣ What I want to be is a Super Woman, not Superwoman. That space in between is important. WHAT THE HELL IS LIMINALITY • • I had never come across this word until my last life transition when I finished business school and decided to leave behind my entire life (boyfriend, house, job) for a shiny new one in London • • I felt a HUGE wave of #anxiety take over me at the time as I’m a massive creature of habit and literally sh*t at dealing with any kind of change so on a professor’s recommendation I read a book called ‘Transitions’ by a gentleman called William Bridges. • • In his book, Bridges explains the concept of #liminality which refers to a transitional or initial stage of a process or a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold. So in simple terms, liminality is what happens right before and right after a big change. • • I hate bl*ody liminality with a passion but rereading some of Bridges’ work on my last day of freedom before #returnity (aka the return from maternity leave, thank you @thereturnityproject !) I feel much calmer being reminded that the uncomfortable #transition I’m about to go through has a beginning a middle and thankfully an end: • 1) Ending, Losing, and Letting Go - when I’m already feeling all the stuff that comes with grieving the end of something like fear, denial and disorientation • 2) The Neutral Zone - where I’m likely to feel resentment about the change and anxiety about my role, status and identity • 3) The New Beginning - when hopefully I’ll experience high energy, openness to learning and a renewed commitment to my team, role and purpose • • I’ll still probably cry all the way to the office on Monday after dropping my daughter at nursery but I’m hoping that this little reminder of how liminality makes us feel helps me embrace the tension between the now and the next big thing and find solace in the fact that I don’t have to be the professional driven contribute to the workplace and the #mentalhealth space OR the mum - that I can very much be both! • • #blog #blogger #bloggersofinstagram #thrive #huffpostuk #lifestyleblogger #balance #balancehacks #worklifebalance #burnout #burnouttobalance #liferehab #burnoutdiaries #burnoutgirl #maternityleave #maternityleaveisover #newmum #instamum

One of the questions I get asked the most is: “Nicole, how can I stay happy and balanced and on top of my shit all the time like you?”⁣ ⁣ From what you know about me or my bio, it might look that way. You might know that I was anchorlady for more than a decade. And you might know that I wrote two bestselling books (maybe you even read them!) on how to be a Rich Bitch and a Boss Bitch—someone who is in control of her financial life and her career future. This is all true.⁣ ⁣ But this is also true: I haven’t always been balanced. I haven’t been on top of my shit all the time. And, despite the success I’ve had, I haven’t been consistently happy.⁣ ⁣ I had a broken and traumatic upbringing, one I hid from by working and then working some more. The more I achieved, the harder I worked. I thought that if I only worked harder, I would be even more successful—and then I would be happy.⁣ ⁣ I told myself, “When I get to this network, I’ll be happy.” Then, I would get there and say, “Well, when I get this position, I’ll be happy.” But, breaking news: I wasn’t. There was always another benchmark for success, always more to achieve, and always more realness to hide from.⁣ ⁣ Until—I had a breakdown. A complete and total mental, physical, and emotional breakdown. Numbing my trauma with so much work for so long finally kicked my ass–in the form of an emergency admittance to the psych ward. And only then did I have no choice but to make myself a priority.⁣ ⁣ Of course, I had experienced setbacks before, but my burnout and subsequent breakdown was the first and only time in my life that I fell down such a deep, dark hole that no one else could get me out of it. No one could swoop in to rescue me. I had to rescue myself.⁣ ⁣ This is the story I tell in my new book. It’s a lot of realness. Some darkness. A whole lot of unabashed openness.⁣ ⁣ That doesn’t mean I’m not scared to tell it. I am. But I knew that after I’d been through hell and walked out of the flames, that I needed to carry buckets of water for those still consumed by the fire. #becomingsuperwoman #burnouttobalance

BURNOUT IS NOW AN OFFICIAL CONDITION ACCORDING TO THE WHO • • Here’s a #throwback to the very day I was taken to hospital with a suspected stroke and that marked the beginning of my #burnout and recovery journey. • • 2.5 years later, this week the World Health Organization recently classified burnout as a "syndrome," medically legitimising the condition for the first time since Herbert Freudenberger first used the term in 1974. • • We finally have a definition and a set of symptoms for something that is becoming more and more common across workplaces all over the world: Burnout results from "chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed." It's easy to fall into the trap of working all day every day and never turning your brain off when you choose your own hours or your business is small and directly dependant on how much you work each day. Burnout is a problem for everyone; business owners, creatives, parents, students and how you combat it is very personal but a tried and tested way to reclaim your life (and your sanity ) is to set yourself standard work hours every day that you abide to. They don't have to be 9-5, you chose this life so you can work on your own terms, choose the hours that suit your lifestyle, your body clock or when your creativity is at its peak. But hold yourself accountable! Allow your brain to turn off at the end of the day and practice your favourite relaxation techniques (trashy TV allowed ✌️) and stepping out of the 'work zone' You've got this!
