Had an awesome time in the field yesterday with my dad. This weekend I saw my first wild California Kingsnake (Lampropeltis californiae), and the story that goes with the snake makes it even more memorable. Saturday morning I got a call about a snake in a friend’s backyard and that they wanted relocated. I’m very glad they called because this guy was stuck in a tangled mess of mesh fencing. He needed to be cut out or he would have slowly died. I cut him out of the mesh and noticed a few scales out of place but no serious injuries. I offered him some water (which he gladly drank) and a frozen mouse that he ate too! After a night of rest, I took him to the hills a short distance from the house and now he’s off free! I’m always down to help wildlife, especially in an increasingly human world.

Large and beaten up Rosy Boa (Lichanura trivirgata roseofusca) seen a few days ago. My dad and I left the house, Monday morning, with pretty low expectations for the day, due to high winds and cold temps. However, I got this rosy fairly quickly. After placing it on a rock for pictures, it managed to slip underneath the rock and almost made a successful escape. Luckily, though, my dad was able to flip the rock and we got the rosy back, but what really surprised us was that a little San Diego Nightsnake (Hypsiglena ochrorhyncha klauberi) was underneath the rock as well. After photographing both the snakes, we said our goodbyes to them and decided to call it a day.
