Can you believe The Fast & the Furious came out 18 yrs ago? It changed how future generations see car culture. What did it mean to you?⠀ ⠀ Let’s get this out of the way - the movie is cheesy, unrealistic, never will win an Oscar for outstanding screenplay, but whether we want to admit it or not, it’s a damn good movie and lines from this have survived the test of time. MONICA!!!!!⠀ ⠀ If you order a sandwich and ask for no crust, don’t tell me that it doesn’t remind you Brian and Mia. If your friends name their baby Dom, how do you not just yell out Toretto! How do you not mention Jesse’s dad whenever you see a mid 90s Jetta? ▴2 -▴3 When I see an F150 Lightning, I think of serial killers named Brian Earl Spilner. That’s not a coincidence. ⠀ ⠀ After watching this movie in 2001, I remember falling deeper into the car culture. I wanted to know more - how cars worked, how mods worked, how suspensions worked, how tuning works, and how I too could overnight parts from Japan. There was so much more for me to learn and this movie gave me taste that inspired me to become even more obsessed with cars and made us all who we are today.⠀ ⠀ For as bad as the movie is, it has survived the test of time and has influenced an entire generation of car nerds to fall deeper into the automotive rabbit hole.⠀ ⠀ The team at Donut would really like to hear from you on this one! Tell us how, if, and why Fast and the Furious influenced your thoughts on car culture & cars in general?⠀ ⠀ Sources: | Universal | eBay |

⚡⚡⚡ Which one is your favorite? Let’s dive in: ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ▴1 First up - an R31 Wagon! This generation was also offered as a coupe & sedan, but boy do we love wagons! Can you believe that Nissan actually had four-wheel steering called HICAS (High Capacity Active Steering) on a car in 1986! The rowdiest version was the GTS-R coupe which only 823 units were built, specifically for racing homologation. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ▴2 Nissan introduced the R32 in 1989 as either a 2 door or a 4 door. Although only rated at 316hp due to the Japanese car makers “gentlemen’s agreement” not to exceed 276hp, the R32’s crowning achievement was obliterating the Nordschleife record held by Porsche by 25 seconds, running a 8’20”.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ▴3 In 1993, the R33 Skyline arrives. Heavier than the R32, engineers went to extreme lengths to lighten the R33 GTR -reducing sound deadening, lightweight springs & wheels, hollow rear sway bar, aluminum axles, and more - resulting in a 7’59” lap time at the Ring, making the GTR the quickest production car in the world at the time.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ▴4 Finally, one of the most legendary Skyline’s- the R34 V-Spec. Nissan used the same motor as the R33, but upgraded the turbo and the chassis significantly. What differentiates this model is the level of interaction that drivers had with the car using the Multi Function Display on the dashboard, providing the vehicles telemetry to the driver.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ▴5 It wasn’t until 2008 that US drivers could legally buy Godzilla by way of the technological marvel known as the R35. The world was amazed how a car that heavy could be so capable. With a motor, futuristic chassis, and sophisticated engineering tweaks that improved the car every year, the GTR cemented itself as one of the greatest sports cars ever.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ We'd like to give a special thanks to Sean Lee (@seanlee768) & Dan Hinton (@mr_s1krr) for allowing us to drool over this amazing GTR collection. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ The 100th episode of UTS went up today on YT & FB. It’s been an amazing ride and we want to thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts. Without you, none of this would be possible. Here’s to 100 more. #donutmedia #GTR

They cruise low & slow with jaw dropping paint jobs. Lowriders epitomize Southern California car culture, but do you know their history?⠀ ⠀ The entire culture started in the late 1940s, but took off during the 50s US economic boom. The exact location is up for debate, but the consensus is that Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, is the birthplace of lowriders. From there, it made its way into East LA where the trend took off.⠀ ⠀ ▴2 - 3 The culture was born from Mexican-American’s who wanted to go against the trend of what was cool at the time - hot rodding, which prioritized speed over style. Where it was vice versa for lowriders who valued style first, speed second. That’s not to say that low riders are slow. Most lowriders pack serious muscle under the hood.⠀ ⠀ ▴4-▴5 These outlaws would cut the springs of their cars to make their cars as low as possible, sometimes to the point of dragging the car frame on the ground. This suffered a proverbial speed bump, when California passed a law in 1958 that outlawed any car with a frame that was lower than the rim of a car.⠀ ⠀ Desperation created innovation when an engineer named Ron Aguirre came up with a hydraulic system that would raise these cars with a flick of a button. Problem solved. ⠀ ⠀ ▴6 - ▴8 For wheels, lowriders preferred the chromed out wired wheels reminiscent of the old MG & Triumphs, with white walls to finish the look. With smaller wheels, lowriders could achieve the look of their cars floating on the ground.⠀ ⠀ In the 60s & 70s the culture flourished into a global trend maintaining its roots in the Mexican-American subculture. These cars have some of the most beautiful paintwork, astounding engineering to accommodate the suspension, custom interiors with such detail & overall attention to detail is otherworldly.⠀ ⠀ ▴9 There is something special about a culture that goes against the norm. In doing so, the pioneers of this culture created art. The next time you see a lowrider, notice the attention to detail and admire the jaw dropping engineering that goes into making these cars actually work.⠀ ⠀ After all, it’s all in the details.⠀ ⠀ Sources: | @majestics_chris | @longbeach_lloyd |

Known as the mafia in Japan, the Yakuza were automotive trailblazers wanting anonymity while driving, but inadvertently created VIP Style.⠀ ⠀ Let’s say you’re involved in organized crime. Would you want to draw attention to yourself while driving around? Probably not. You’d want to drive something sensible, forgettable, & something that would keep you anonymous. Right?⠀ ⠀ ▴2 Well, the Yakuza interpreted anonymity a bit differently. Known for wearing custom suits to cover their beautifully ornate full body tattoos, rocking dark glasses at all times, and travelling in large groups, the Yakuza’s definition of anonymity was quite different.⠀ ⠀ ▴3 For transportation, the Yakuza decided against flashy attention grabbing colorful transportation like the bosozoku. Instead they would drive inconspicuous, boring, mundane and conservative colored sedans.⠀ ⠀ They believed the police would ignore you if you’re cruising along in a car that didn’t stick out like a sore thumb. But the Yakuza couldn’t help themselves and just drive a stock car.▴4 They had to add a little flavor to the car to make it distinctive. They wanted a distinctive car that would blend in! ⠀ That distinctive look came in the form of nicer wheels and lowered suspension. With a quick glance, their car would look like an ordinary sedan, but if you looked closer, it was anything but ordinary.⠀ ⠀ Similar to the association of low-riders & gang culture, the Yakuza style inspired the modification of cars that normally wouldn’t get modified & called this VIP style, or “Bippu”. And like most car cultures, the longer a trend exists, the more intricate the modifications become.⠀ ⠀ ▴5 - ▴10 At first, it was just air suspension, wheels, tint, and widebody kits on luxury sedans. Then it moved to ornate details like curtains on the rear windows, sake serving areas, wooden floor mats, custom upholstery, upholstered tissue boxes, and neck pillows.⠀ ⠀ A car trend that originated as a way to avoid attention, has transformed into a scene where cars are looking to garner all the attention.⠀ ⠀ Sources: | wikipedia | @moto_club4ag | Bellezza | ⠀ ⠀
