Finally back! When I first started building my stereo system, I was finding all sorts of cool gear at the local thrift stores (GW). I had bought a Denon CD changer but couldn't get it to work. They offered a brief return window on electronics, and since I didn't know how to fix it I brought it back for store credit. I saw this sitting on the shelf for $25 and figured it looked high quality, so I snagged it. Took a few weeks and ended up having it repaired professionally, and had to bring it back for some additional repairs (sometimes won't shut off), just got it home today. Got myself a new #cassetteplayer last week -- a Sony TC-WE305 from the mid-90s. It's not a top-of-the-line item by any means, but since it's a new old stock, everything is in perfect working condition. I've been listening to my old tapes again, and one of the albums I've 'rediscovered' is this, #Mansun's #LittleKix /// My impression of the album when I first bought it nineteen years ago(!) wasn't exactly negative, but after the gleeful excess and experimentalism of Six, Little Kix' power ballads and adult contemporary tunes did sound a bit unnerving. From being a peer of Radiohead, The Verve and Blur, Mansun now sounded like they'd be more at home filed next to Genesis, Sting and Foreigner. (My sister even went as far as calling "Forgive Me" the best boyband tune a boyband never performed ) /// Listened to again today -- without considering what has came before and what the musical landscape looked like at the time of release -- Little Kix came across as a thoroughly competent pop album. "A New Beginning" is a captivating opening tune; "I Can Only Disappoint U" remains one of my favorite Mansun singles; "Fool" is still a great pop song -- even if it was originally written as a piss-take on the music industry; and ballads like "Forgive Me" and "Until The Next Life" sound like they'd make great lighter-in-the-air stadium moments.
