Guys, I did it!! As promised, on Wednesday I walked down the red carpet at the @princestrust Awards with my walking stick (of course had to get a picture before the chaos of the press and celebs!!) I know I preach about embracing your body, even if you’ve got a chronic illness, but this was really huge for me. Using a walking aid gives me a lot of anxiety, even though it helps me manage my physical symptoms. Strangers will often come up to me to ask what I’ve injured, and although I’m sure it comes from a kindhearted place... for me, it brings up a lot of my insecurities surrounding the stigma of having an invisible illness. I’ve been told so many times “you don’t look ill” and that’s made it hard to have my disability and my needs taken seriously. - I cannot thank all of you enough. Every day you give me the courage and strength to love myself, and I hope this post gives you a little bit back too! - Wednesday was such an inspiring day, and all of the winners were so well deserved. It humbled me to be surrounded by such greatness, and it motivated me to keep sharing my journey with you all so openly. Healing takes time and healing isn’t easy. It’s not easy because it requires changes and really looking at things. I’m not just talking healing illness, I’m talking healing on all levels, it comes in many forms. We all accumulate emotional baggage as we go through life and there are times healing needs to happen. It’s a life long process. I often talk of being on a constant healing journey, yes in one way to hopefully one day live the life I want but also healing old thought patterns, old habits and old ways. Those are the hardest of all the change, but I am trying and I am learning, which in some way is actually more important than the end goal I feel. There’s a quote that says “you can’t heal in the environment that made you sick” and this prompted this image to come to life. I’ve often discussed before I relapsed boundaries didn’t exist in any form. I rushed around being everything to everyone, putting my own needs last. I felt responsible for everything and I always wanted to make people feel like they didn’t have to worry or that it’s okay I’ll help fix it all, my most common saying to everyone was “no worries” in other words it’s okay I’ll take your burden on and help - you don’t need to worry about a thing. Not because I thought I was some superhero but because I never recognised boundaries, I looked deep inwards and healed childhood wounds which I didn’t even realise impacted me now. It’s not my job to fix it all! It’s too much to share in one caption but happy chat in DMs if you want to discuss more. All I want to point out today is boundaries are not selfish or something to be guilty for, everyone needs them and most people do have some, but if you’re like me you’ll likely have not even considered them, you just feel responsible for other people’s problems, pain and hurts. BUT You are ultimately only responsible for yourself, your actions and your responses- that is it. You don’t have to be all those things to all those people. It’s not easy and it takes time, I’m still learning now... constantly, but I can honestly say it’s one of the most healing, uplifting and freeing things once you start adding them in to your life.
