On Saturday, February 02, 2019, Elizabeth Police Officers Veroncica Garcia and Mauricio Zorrila were patrolling the 400 block of Morris Avenue when they were flagged down by passerby regarding an active fire. The Officers responded to 431 Morris Avenue where they observed heavy smoke and flames coming from the residence. With little regard for their own safety, the Officers sprung into action and entered the burning building in an attempt to make contact with the residents. The Officers woke up several families and evacuated them outside to safety. Due to heavy smoke conditions, the Officers began to have difficulty breathing and were forced to exit the property numerous times before reentering the building to look for additional tenants. At one point during the evacuation efforts, Officer Zorrilla carried a 4 year old child out of the building while Officer Garcia assisted an elderly woman outside to safety. Numerous EFD companies responded on scene and did an outstanding job dealing with a large volume of fire and freezing temperatures. The 2 alarm fire was put out with no injuries to persons and limited damage to additional properties. Elizabeth PBA#4 commends Officers Garcia and Zorrilla for their valiant actions while displaying true signs of courage and bravery as they rescued the lives of numerous city residents.
