In Western/European countries you have people obsessing over tanning their skin because it’s apparently “more attractive.” But in Asian countries there’s an obsession over bleaching your skin. This came from the idea that darker skin was associated with poverty, as it meant that those who were darker spent more time outside for work as farmers for example, instead of business owners or political leaders who hardly needed to do any physical work day-to-day. When I was in year 8, one of my school teachers told me that she went overseas to some Asian countries, and she wore fake tan. She said that they all thought she was crazy, because she was making herself darker, whilst they were all trying to make their skin lighter. It’s deeply rooted hate. It’s even internal racism. All countries have an indigenous population. Most countries have tried so hard to silence their aboriginals. “Colourism” is an illness. The way people look is not enough for you to judge them as a person. The way someone looks, is barely 10% of who they are. To live in a world where your species cares more about what skin colour they have than what morals they have, is so sad and disturbing. It just makes you wonder where human beings went wrong. Where in the past did all of this hate come from? When did it all begin? And just... why? There’s nothing more beautiful than being comfortable in your own skin. And there’s nothing more acceptable than judging people based off their character instead of their exterior. Classism and racism have had a major impact on the behaviours of human beings towards one another. We shouldn’t be separated into richer or poorer or middle classes. We shouldn’t have to be placed in certain places in society because of how we look or where you think our “skin colour best suits.” We’re all equal and perfectly capable of the same jobs, positions or lifestyles as each other. I shed some happy tears the other day just thinking about my childhood, growing up poor & always thinking that the good life doesn’t apply to us who have less.
