The brains of people with excellent general knowledge are particularly efficiently wired. This was shown by neuroscientists at Ruhr-Universität Bochum and Humboldt-Universität Zu Berlin using magnetic resonance imaging. “Although we can precisely measure the general knowledge of people and this wealth of knowledge is very important for an individual’s journey through life, we currently know little about the links between general knowledge and the characteristics of the brain,” says Dr. Erhan Genç from the Department of Biopsychology in Bochum. The team describes the results in the European Journal of Personality on 28 July 2019.

My dad has always been a personal hero. I vividly remember him jumping off the top of our RV to help me when I was being attacked and bitten by a dog. I grew up always knowing that I was loved because he told me over and over and over again. But it’s the times now the moments he was able to mentor me when life was so hard in my teens and 20’s that come back to me - little one liners that I remember now and will remember forever. ♾ It gives me great pleasure today to finally be able to dedicate a permanent work of art in his honor. Cognition is dedicated to my father who who’s optimism, enthusiasm and work ethic taught me that I could always achieve the desires of my heart. ⚙️ He was always a gear head and I think he will really dig the gear motif. However, DISRUPTED sleep and longer sleep duration (I.e. 10+ hours) are linked to higher levels of inflammation (i.e. higher markers of C-reactive protein, and interleukin-6).

One theory is that activation of the sympathetic nervous system in the middle of the night (when it should not be active) results in an inflammatory response that is brought on any time the sympathetic nervous system is triggered past baseline. Thus, exposure to more inflammation than necessary in a 24hr time span ensues. Additionally, we know that a certain quality of sleep must be maintained for the body to appropriately reduce inflammation we experience in our day-to-day.

Longer durations of sleep are likely linked to inflammation as people who sleep that long regularly tend to have several other unhealthy habits that contribute to whole-body inflammation.

Now, over time short sleep durations are not great for our health but I would not sweat a night or two of little sleep in short proximity as long as you have optimized the quality of that sleep. We do know that after one night of poor sleep, insulin sensitivity will drop. Thus, you should not make short nights of sleep a habit. However, you can combat negative side effects by utilizing strategies to stay asleep (quality) on nights you know quantity will suffer.
