Let us talk about the difference between PTSD and Complex PTSD. It’s assumed that everyone that has endured trauma has PTSD. Though there is a distinction. PTSD relates to sensory flashbacks that a person experiences when they are met with a sound, smell, or other stimulus that has been conditioned to signify danger and threat. This immediately activates the sympathetic nervous system and leads a person into past memories real time. Intrusions happen in dreams, thoughts, and there is an experience of intense fear that link back to these traumatic incidents. CPTSD is more of a chronic ongoing series of trauma. This person’s experience can be filled with 1 or several traumatic experiences, and/or ongoing neglect, abuse—where a person cannot really identify 1 incident since their lives were filled with ongoing, never ending painful experiences. Therefore, triggers are more relational- things people say, things people do, certain behaviors of others are triggers and activate threat responses. These behaviors are memories of painful pasts where they were hurt by others. For both, healing happens in connection to others. For healing to happen, we must take the risk of being seen by another, and when ready, slowly trusting them with our hearts. This can be a therapist, friend, family member. It’s also important that we re-claim our control over our bodies by practicing self regulation and relaxation. So when we are met with emotional or sensory triggers, we can manage our threat response by regulating our bodies- sending a message we are not in danger—and eventually pairing the conditioned stimulus (whatever the trigger is) with the new conditioned response (regulation, self control, groundedness, clarity). It’s hard work. It can feel like a lot is at stake in the beginning. Go at your own speed. You navigate your healing. I adore friends who give it to us real. Straight, no chaser. . . You are all gorgeous, beautiful women.  Of course a man will want to be with you.  He may even chase you until you give in.  Just know that the moment you do, YOU CHOOSE HIM. . . F-boys just don't find you.  You have to allow them into your life.  We make the choice.  The best question to ask yourself on this journey is "what part of me resonates with f-boys?" "What parts of me attract these men?" "What do I have in common with them"? Believe it or not, men have the same insecurities we do.  The same traumas.  The same emotional issues.  They just choose to handle them differently. . . As children, life just HAPPENS to us because we often had no choice in the matter.  So it's easy to carry the same feeling and operation into our adult life and not realize that we make the choice because our inner little girls are still powerless.  Allow your adult to step in and take over. But in order to make better choices we have to be aware of the ones we make not and that requires some brutal honesty. . . And you may not like the answers.  But it is part of the healing process.  The choice to face the good and the bad and make peace with it all. One of the core shifts you’ll need to make on your journey to healing your heart is from the wounded inner little girl to the happy and whole woman. . . Many of us still operate from the wounded parts of ourselves and this shows up in our relationships. Especially, romantic relationships. The ways in which we expected disappointed from a parent is typically the same expectation we set in relationships. . . The difference is we make our partners responsible for making up for those painful years. If those expectations aren’t met then we act out, beg and plead instead of realizing that we have the power to walk away. You see, we couldn’t just walk away as kids. We were stuck with our parents and their trauma. Unconsciously they often passed this trauma via unconscious parenting. So we we’re stuck because what we now know as trauma is what we were forced to accept as love. . . Your most difficult shift will be the decision to accept that as well as the decision to change. With that change comes the freedom to decide who you want to show up as in your relationships. I see my whole and happy woman as a script I journal about daily. I write about situations I’m dealing with as well as how I want to handle certain situations coming up. . . Start scripting OUT the wounded inner little girl and and affirm via journaling the whole woman you want to be. Acknowledge the wounded parts of you but she shouldn’t be running your show. It’s time to put her to bed. Mama’s home. That mama you’ve always needed is you.

Let go of the “little girl” energy that says you have to beg and plead to get what you want in your relationships. Remember, our inner little girls don’t run this show anymore. . . Learn to stand up for what you need without being needy or demanding. If you don’t like the food at a restaurant you don’t cuss the chef out, you find another restaurant. Same in our romantic relationships. . . Learn to go with he flow. At our darkest times, the thought that we are a burden takes hold and seems like the truth. For people with Complex PTSD, this is a huge struggle. The tools for shaping a strong sense of self were not nurtured in a traumatic childhood, and this follows us into adulthood. Being in a relationship while having C-PTSD is especially difficult. There is a strong desire to self-abandon and self-neglect, especially when triggered or in an emotional flashback. So in those times, it’s hard to accept love and care from someone else, when you struggle to do it yourself. There is so much doubt- doubting yourself, doubting that your situation will ever change, doubting that you are healing, doubting your partner’s reasons for staying by your side. You might think you know better than them, because you know the “real you.” But people with C-PTSD often can’t see themselves clearly! They deny the good about themselves. They fixate on any flaws or struggles. Since trusting is hard, it’s can feel scary to trust your safe partner and let them care for you. But your ability to be loved and cared for will come easier as you heal. As much as you can, be mindful that your sense of self may have been compromised by trauma. You may believe a lie- that you are a burden. You are NOT a burden. If someone says you are, they are most likely not safe for you to be around. You are not bad.
