Sounds great, but some materials emit harmful toxins when they break down, or can't break down in landfills at all because of the lack of oxygen. Meet Stephen Ciancioso @buenavistagardens from Kauai, Hawaii, United States “I got inspired to grow food by witnessing the abundance here firsthand and also doing a WWOOF apprenticeship on a small local farm in my area. This opened up my eyes to small scale profitable farming. I grow food because it checks off all of the things I want as part of my life. Working outside, with my hands, being a steward of the land, building community, problem solving, and learning, always learning. I'm on the island of Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands and I grow intensive vegetables on about 1/3rd of an acre of land. It comes out to about 60 beds that are roughly 50ft long. I focus on soil nutrition for pest management and I very rarely use any organic sprays of any kind. In my eyes by focusing on plant nutrition they build an immune system that makes them much less susceptible to pests. I'm in a no till garden system to try to foster a large population and diversity of microorganisms and I also try to employ the use of cover crops and green manures to help that process along. The biggest hurdle for me is generally mother nature. I live in a subtropical climate that can be quite harsh for growing vegetables in the field and we deal with constant rains and wind. Overall though I am blessed with the growing conditions here and try not to let it discourage me too much. The greatest reward for me is a sense of deep personal achievement and the ability to work with nature to create a beautiful healthy space. I'm currently not involved in community initiatives related to farming in my area. Since this is just my second season as a farmer on my own I've been very focused on my own operation. I would love to be a mentor to other farmers in the future though. I think we are all capable of doing anything we put our heart towards and our mind into.“

The most important step in reviving the farm’s soil was planting cover crop— edible grasses, clovers, peas, radishes, even plants that may be considered weeds planted between orchard rows ⁠ ⁠ The conventional notion is that these plants are competing with the trees for resources. However cover cropping adds biodiversity and organic matter to the soil, prevents erosion, suppresses invasive weeds, sequesters carbon, AND most importantly for us SoCal farmers, sequesters water and prevents run-off. The cover crop acts like a sponge, absorbing excess water enabling it to slowly recharge our aquifer.⁠ ⁠ How do you manage this added life-force in the orchards? Cue our sheep herd— who grazes through our orchards and fertilizes the soil before they’re moved onto the next section.
