Notes from a STEM-Talk with Dr. Keith Baar:

When we move quickly, the tendon behaves differently than when we move slowly.
•
To increase stiffness, do movements as quick as possible. Collagen within the tendon acts as a sheet - as a unified group of molecules. The result is, you're not going to break any of the cross-links between the individual collagen molecules AND you'll increase the expression of the gene that makes new cross links. This will add cross-links, and because you didn't break any, the tissue will become stiffer. This stiffer tissue will allow you to perform better.
•
To decrease stiffness, do the loading more slowly. Collagen molecules can act individually and slide past one another independently. As you can imagine, when two things slide past each other, if there are any connections between them (cross-links), they will be broken. This is what is happening when we do a heavy isometric, heavy eccentric, or heavy concentric. You will still increase the expression of the cross-linking enzyme, so you'll add some back, but because you broke some of the cross-links, you're going to slightly decrease the stiffness of the tendon.
•
Applied:
•
If you get lots of injuries and are super fast to begin with, you should use more slow movements in training.
•
If you've never had a musculoskeletal injury, you can do all of your movements faster because this will improve performance.
•
My take: If you do fast movements in sport competition and practice, do you really need more fast movements in the weight room at that time? Seems, from a health perspective, that it would be wise to shut up and squat heavy #WOO #LETSGO
