If your child is following a #milkfree diet it’s important to consider the impact of removing dairy (a whole food group) on dietary balance & adequacy.
•
Some of my top nutrients to check are above ⬆️ based on key vitamins/mineral milk products provide alongside their energy & protein contribution to a child’s diet
•
Why these are important & alternative sources to consider are summarised below.
•
1️⃣ CALCIUM
⭐️ Essential for: bone health, muscle contraction, blood clotting
•
calcium rich alternatives:
- Calcium fortified: ‘ milk alternatives e.g. soya, oat, pea, coconut ‘milk’, yoghurts, cheese - Calcium fortified cereals or breads eg Ready break, Cheerios, Kingsmill 50/50 vitamin enriched
- Calcium set tofu
- Tahini (sesame paste)
- Green leafy vegetables
- Dried apricots or figs
•
2️⃣ IODINE
⭐️ Essential for: thyroid function, physical neurocognitive development. Also essential for brain development in utero e.g during pregnancy
•
Non dairy iodine rich foods:
- white fish e.g. cod or haddock
- shellfish eg prawns
- egg
- Iodine fortified milk alternatives eg alpro junior soya milk, koko ‘super’ milk, M&S plant based milk range, ASDA oat milk
- *may need supplementation
•
3️⃣ Vitamin B12
⭐️ Essential for: brain function & development of red blood cells, DNA synthesis, releasing energy from foods
•
Especially important to check if your child is also vegetarian, vegan or has poor intake of animal protein
•
Non dairy sources of B12:
- Meat & fish
- Eggs
- Fortified breads or cereals
- *may need supplementation
•
4️⃣ Vitamin D ☀️
⭐️ Essential for: managing calcium & phosphate In the body - to keep bones, teeth & muscle healthy
•
Sources:
- Sunshine on the skin! - Red meat
- Oily fish
- Egg yolk
- Fortified cereals, & milk alternatives - SUPPLEMENTATION ‼️
✅All breastfed babies, or those having <500mls formula should be supplemented with 8.5-10ug Vitamin D per day
✅All children 1-4 years should have daily supplementation of 10ug Vitamin D

Can’t believe I don’t have an up to date photo..
But as it’s #worldbreastfeedingweek2019 I thought I’d pop a post up.
Little Everly has weened herself off the boob which to me was honestly a shock! Go back 3 months ago and I was struggling to get her to take a bottle.
But since she has been diagnosed with #cowsmilkallergy we have put her on @alpro 123 Junior Growing Up Soya and she absolutely loves it.
So Everly weened herself off the boob, but I am so so proud of achieving over a year of breastfeeding.
I really put myself down as a mum when Vienna has to combi feed because I had in my head that I was only going to breastfeed when I was pregnant with Vienna - but she lost quite a lot of weight and after getting super upset and disheartened I combi fed Vienna - LOOKING BACK, I honestly do not know why I got so upset... FED IS BEST! Some parents don’t want to breastfeed, some can’t at all... there is nothing wrong with a bottle at all! And I wish I had told myself that back when I was trying to breastfeed Vienna! She’s a healthy and happy little soul
•
When Everly was born I was sure I would combi feed because I enjoyed it so much with Vienna - but Everly went the complete opposite and would not take a bottle. I have absolutely loved every minute of breastfeeding Everly.
But I’m not going to lie, as I wasn’t able to pump, it was super tricky when I ever wanted to go out ♀️ I had to time it so right
But the little monkey is now on @alpro soya and couldn’t be happier.

Today Keira had her first birthday party with all her teeny pals. Didn't quite think ahead on how hard it would be to get a photo of twelve tots to pose for a photo #birthdaygirl

BREASTFEEDING MAMAS

I frequently get asked how long I think I will feed for... I don’t know to be honest I guess until it feels right How long has everyone else fed their little ones until? Did anyone feed more than one child at a time? Has anyone’s child got a #milkproteinallergy or #dairyallergy which affects how you are living? .

•CMA or CMPA is one of the most common allergies affecting around 7% of babies under 1
•CMA typically develops when cows' milk is first introduced into your baby's diet either in formula or solids
•It can also affect babies who are exclusively breastfed because of cows' milk from the mother's diet
Symptoms:
•skin reactions – such as a red itchy rash or swelling of the lips, face and around the eyes
•digestive problems – such as stomach ache, vomiting, colic, diarrhoea or constipation
•hay fever-like symptoms – such as a runny or blocked nose
•eczema that does not improve with treatment
Diagnosis:
•If you think your child may have an allergy to cow’s milk , see a GP.
•Your child's symptoms, medical history and overall assessment will be taken into account to help decide whether allergy tests are required
•Allergy tests can be performed on the skin or the Doctor may suggest a blood test.
•Some allergies require a specific diet to aid the diagnosis
