I’ve struggled a little bit with where I fit into this instagram landscape. Am I a photographer? An agricultural ambassador? A dairy educator? A mom with a camera? I’m not sure. I guess I like to think I’m a storyteller. But these stories are not fiction. Because the images I share from around our farm are our real life, every day story. And these stories are the truth for the vast majority of farms across North America. I have become a little protective of this space. I share my children and my heart in this space. It is a space for our story. And if that happens to open our barn doors and the opportunity for conversation, than that’s a win win. I love answering honest, thoughtful questions about the industry we work so hard for, and the animals we care so deeply about. But if it opens it up to cyber bulling, judgement and hatred, I’m not here for it. I wasn’t going to say anything about the Fair Oaks video. Honestly, I haven’t been able to bring myself to watch it. Because I know it would break my heart wide open and make me incredibly angry and want to vomit all at the same time. I will say this. There is no excuse for animal abuse. Never in a billion years. That is not dairy farming. We are the first people to say that treating animals poorly just SHOULD NOT be tolerated. Unfortunately, whether the activists created the abuse to film or not, it takes one video to tarnish the whole industry. It would be really easy for me to just get defensive. To talk about how extremist these animal activists are. But at the end of the day, consumers will believe what they want to believe. So we need to do better. Actions speak louder than words. We need to prove that a video like that is NOT what we are about. That what happened at Fair Oaks is gut wrenching and heart breaking and it is NOT dairy farming. So please know that this space is a safe space to ask your questions, respectfully question what we do.
