Thom at Taboo, 1985 Clubbing existed well before 1988, in spite of what you may read in some twisted nightlife histories, and ecstasy was knocking around before then too. Here is Thom, a lovely American stylist and hairdresser, who might have been a little spangled on this occasion. If it looks like it’s happening in a 1970s disco that’s because that’s what the venue Maximus was, although it was taken in 1985 at Taboo, the night run by Leigh Bowery and Tony Gordon. The story I was told was that one of the regulars at Taboo was bold enough to bring half a suitcase of MDMA back from New York (where it was still legal until 1 July 1985), and it was distributed to many of his friends at the club, which only served to make the party more hedonistic than ever – it’s no coincidence that after Taboo closed in the summer of 1986 the club which effectively replaced it on Thursdays was called Vive L’Anarchie.
