Conheça a Cratera de #Darvaza, um buraco situado no deserto de #Karakum, que chega a ter quase 70 metros de largura, cerca de 30 metros de profundidade e que está em chamas há mais de 40 anos. Por causa do fogo que se origina em suas profundezas subterrâneas, o lugar ganhou o apelido de "Porta para o Inferno". A cratera de Darvaza está localizada em uma zona que abriga enormes reservas de gás natural. A história mais aceita para sua origem conta que, no começo dos anos 1970, quando o território do Turcomenistão fazia parte da União Soviética, foram realizadas perfurações na região com o objetivo de tentar explorar os recursos naturais da área. Durante os trabalhos, porém, parte do solo cedeu e deu origem ao buraco. . Junto com isso, os profissionais envolvidos no projeto teriam percebido que, da cavidade recém-aberta, estava sendo expelida uma grande quantidade de gás (que eles julgaram ser perigoso para as pessoas que estavam no lugar). A "solução" encontrada foi a de botar fogo no buraco, para tentar extinguir o gás que estava saindo dali. My adventures in Turkmenistan led me to the edge of hell ... but not literally. The Darwaza Gas Crater, affectionately called the Gates of Hell, is in the middle of the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan. In 1971, Soviet geologists started to drill for oil, but accidentally tapped into a natural gas cavern. The mine collapsed and the cavern began to release natural gas. Worried that natural gas fumes would drift and poison nearby communities, Soviet engineers decided to set the collapsed mine on fire, thinking the fire would burn out in a few days. THE DOOR TO HELL: the Darvaza gas crater is a natural gas field that collapsed into an underground cavern. To prevent the local people from the methane gas geologists set the gas on fire. They thought the flames would go out after a few days, but it never happened. That was in 1971. Since then the fire is burning. That's 48 years!!
