My adventures in Turkmenistan led me to the edge of hell ... but not literally. The Darwaza Gas Crater, affectionately called the Gates of Hell, is in the middle of the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan. In 1971, Soviet geologists started to drill for oil, but accidentally tapped into a natural gas cavern. The mine collapsed and the cavern began to release natural gas. Worried that natural gas fumes would drift and poison nearby communities, Soviet engineers decided to set the collapsed mine on fire, thinking the fire would burn out in a few days.
