Video has no sound. . “Hello! I am at Badlands National Park. I am excited to let you know that this week is special. It is Deaf Awareness Week. Here at Badlands, we celebrate all languages, including American Sign Language. Come visit us here at Badlands. see you soon!” . For most of us, we never think of what it would be like to live in a silent or nearly silent world. However, according to W.H.O., over 5% of the global population is Deaf or Hard of Hearing. This equates to over 372 million people. So, this week we want to recognize #internationalweekofthedeaf. At Badlands National Park, we want visitors regardless of their language to feel welcome. And, for visitors who use ASL, we have a ranger with us through 2019 who can sign! Just give us a heads up when you are visiting so we know to have him around. . #Deaf #deafcommunity #asl #deafawarenessweek #deafawarenessweek2018 #findyourpark #hifromsd #badlandsnationalpark @saguaronationalpark

Hi mine name is KISA (sign name ) I sign because i want to hearing and deaf together as one September is Deaf awareness month !!! —❤ Here is 7 Basic Communication Tips for Interacting with Deaf and Hard of Hearing People -1. Never do anything from behind without letting the person know that you are present. If they are situated away from you, tap their shoulder lightly to get their attention. Never walk up directly behind the Deaf individual. Try to walk around, allowing them to see you and tap them on the shoulder lightly. -2. Be very careful with your labels. Never call an individual “deaf and dumb” or “hearing impaired.” These labels imply that the individual cannot think or that they are broken because they cannot hear. Appropriate terms would be “deaf” or “hard of hearing” or “person with a hearing loss.” Use the term that the individual prefers. -3. Be aware of communication needs. Not all deaf individuals are the same regarding communication needs so it is important to note preferences and make access to information and communication as accessible as possible. -4. Don’t shout. It will not improve the person’s ability to hear you. It will make things louder, for sure, but it won’t make things clear and understandable. -5. Eye contact and facial expressions Eye contact and facial expressions are very important in Deaf culture. It one doesn’t look at the person who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing while talking to them, that person will feel that the hearing person is not interested in what they’re saying. -6. Hand Waving, Foot Stomping and Light Flashing When people who are Deaf wave their hands, stomp their feet or flash a light (3 times maximum), it is often an indication of trying to get an individual’s attention. It may seem rude or immature but it is very appropriate in Deaf culture to do these actions. -7. Keep a Pen and Paper Handy This can be one mode of communication that you can use. If you wish to join me in bridging the gap between the deaf and hearing by spreading deaf awareness in YOUR state then lets collaberate. Deaf Awareness Week - Day 1 of 8 ** Today is the International Day of Sign Languages - also the first day of International Week of the Deaf. I’m starting off with this video never posted before… filmed 2 1/2 years ago when I lived in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Prior to filming, I was feeling emotional thinking that I wouldn’t be who I was or where I was if not for my parents learning sign to communicate with me, like I can’t imagine growing up without sign language… like what is life without language? Sign language gave my parents and I a way to communicate and it was through sign language, I was given a chance at life, despite that I couldn’t hear- I was given a chance to live like really live… to be able to communicate, to learn, to think, to dream, to work, to live my dreams. Every deaf child deserves the same- life and that’s why I’m passionate about reaching hearing parents of deaf children and showing them that it’s not the end of the world if their baby is deaf and to encourage them to learn sign to communicate with them so that they can have a good relationship with their deaf child. I believe it’s vital to a deaf child’s success in the hearing world- to have language and a good relationship with their parents. . #signlanguage #asl #deaf #americansignlanguage #deafculture #deafcommunity #deafworld #awareness #deafawareness #deafawarenessweek #IWDeaf2018 #internationalweekofthedeaf #IDSL2018 #SignLanguagesDay #thankful
