Today is International Dance Day! Celebrated on April 29 since 1982, this special day was introduced by the International Dance Council, a UNESCO partner. The purpose of the day is to attract the attention of the wider public to the art of dance. When you think of dance in art, one name comes on top of mind: Edgar Degas. More than half of his works depicts dancers. 'Two Dancers on a Stage' is in the collection of the @courtauld. #todayisartday #art #arte #kunst #artist #painting #artwork #arthistory #fineart #artoftheday #artpic #dailyart #artgallery #edgardegas #degas #dance #dancing #internationaldanceday #danceday #impressionism

For #TutuTuesday - More from rehearsal! The museum notes to this painting include this interesting tidbit: "The watering can, visible at left, was a standard fixture in ballet rehearsal rooms; water was sprinkled on the floor to keep dust from rising when ballerinas danced. Degas also used the watering can as a visual pun: its shape is mimicked by that of the dancer at right." Vincent van Gogh-La Mousmé,1888 On July 29, 1888, Van Gogh wrote his younger brother Theo, an art dealer in a Parisian gallery, that "if you know what a 'mousmé' is (you will know when you have read Loti's Madame Chrysanthème), I have just painted one. It took me a whole week...but I had to reserve my mental energy to do the mousmé well." Van Gogh’s literary source was a popular novel from the period, whose story of a French man’s affair with a Japanese girl reflected the French fascination with Japanese culture. One of the book’s protagonists, a young, pretty Japanese girl, was called a mousmé in the author’s parlance, which Van Gogh took as his inspiration for this portrait of a young Provençale girl. The carefully modeled face and the vigorous linear patterns of bold complementary colors that describe the girl are stylistic devices that express Van Gogh's sympathetic response to his young sitter. In several descriptions of the painting Van Gogh mentioned the oleander buds in her hand. The significance of the flowers is unclear but may be related to the artist's pantheistic beliefs in natural cycles of birth and renewal. #vincentvangogh #vangogh#chairpainting #toulouselautrec#edvardmunch #bonnard#paintings#painting #oilpainting#oilpaintings #art#artwork#dailyart#postimpressionism #lovingvincent#impressionism #arthistory #stilllife#degas #dali #picasso #pablopicasso#artoftheday #arte #artofinstagram

Bugün Dünya Dans Günü! Maharetine güvenenleri piste alalım Dansı duyunca Degas'ı anımsadım, bugünün hatırına size kendisini tanıtmak istedim. Edgar Degas'ın eserlerinin büyük bir bölümünü dansçılar oluşturur. Bale sınıflarında oturan, performanslarını sergileyen, esneme hareketleri yapan bir sürü balerin resmetmiştir. Hatta dün gece hikayede paylaştığım quiz görselindeki balerin kız heykeli de Degas'a ait.
