Happy Birthday to Willem de Kooning, born on this day in 1904 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. One of the most innovative and influential artists of the twentieth-century, de Kooning established his reputation in New York City in the late 1940s as a leading figure of Abstract Expressionism. Over the course of the next forty years, he continued to tirelessly experiment with new styles and techniques, refusing to settle upon one signature style.
