Have you ever loved a premise, but disliked the book? ⚜️⚜️⚜️ Review with light spoilers: I snapped up this book immediately, without reading a single review, when it was recommended in the "villains to lovers" trope category on @baecrate stories a few days ago. That was because the premise was so tantalizing--a romance with Jafar as the villainous romantic hero in an Aladdin retelling. I expected a slow burn and psychological warfare. I got pretty much the opposite. There was nothing slow about this book. It immediately opens with a consummation of nearly five years of longing (all the longing stuff I wanted to read!) and flies on from there. The plot was contemporized into a mafia/gang type setting. I had hoped for fantasy, although the setting change did, largely, work. Unfortunately, though, there was very little character development. We're told the characters are what they are, we don't see it built via their actions in the story. The character arcs felt cliche but also somehow confusing thanks to the extreme speed at which the characters change their minds. This is all owed to the fact that they--and the rest of the plot--are 100% vehicles for racy sex scenes. Without the character element, though, the piece I most wanted from a villain flip, I just didn't care. There were some good ideas, but to work I think they needed to be fleshed out in a much longer piece. In the end, what I hoped for and what this was were just two different things. ⭐⭐/5 P.S. Thanks to Baecrate/@booksandbevvys for providing such awesome recommendations. This one turned out not to be for me, but they are a great resource if you like romance at all!
