I suggest a digital detox. During the detox, it is easier to avoid it all together than try to resist a $2 billion computer algorithm pointed at your poor brain. Take up this challenge as the ultimate self-care project. Plan a weekend where you wouldn’t need to use technology. Fill it with other activities like being in nature, reading, playing board games, writing, making art, meeting a friend in person,konmari your home, cook, meditate, volunteer or do whatever you like to do. This should really help you feel like you are back in touch with YOURSELF again especially if you have anxiety. If you keep switching between apps and open up google or your email for no particular reason. It will help you remember what it’s like to BE PRESENT. Believe me, it is doable. It is possible. You could also start small. Try for half a day. This will give you a chance to observe just how bad your attachment to your phone is and how often you reach for it instinctively. Yes, I know it is ironic that I am using social media to take about using less social media, but I believe it can be very helpful to put the phone down and I am compelled to say so to all of you here. My relationship with my phone, and Instagram in particular, has changed dramatically over the past six months. You might remember last summer I took a month off IG after extreme burnout and when I came back I set myself some much needed boundaries about how I would have a healthier relationship with these squares. One of these was to have one 24 hour period off Insta each week. Delete the app and no peeking. Even though I’d done a month off this still felt hard, but as time went by it got easier and a much anticipated part of my week. But just recently I noticed myself on here again on a Saturday. I initially panicked but I took a step back and took a closer look. It turns out I’m not needing such a strict rule as my IG use throughout the week is now MUCH healthier. I don’t post every day, I don’t even always story every day, I don’t feel the pressure to create content, be present or in fact say anything at all. In short, I’m enjoying it again but this time I’m in control.
