Retinoscopy Practice makes perfect! Only after my first mission trip and after two pediatric-focused rotations was I able to confidently perform retinoscopy. The sheer volume of patients meant that I was able to practice and perfect this skill. First, I’d like to thank my family for the love and support. I’d also like to thank all my friends through optometry school and back home. And I’d like to thank every professor, preceptor and attending that I’ve had through school and rotations. This was by far the toughest and I just wanted to let y’all know ya girl made it!

‍⚕️ I help people keep their eyes healthy and I help them see clearly. I’m an Optometrist. When people ask me what I do I’ve started saying the above more and more often. I’m passionate about what I do and I don’t think I convey that excitement enough to others outside of the field and that’s something I’ve been working on recently. More than 32 million Americans have never had their eyes examined! People need to hear about what we do and there’s a lot of work that still needs to be done. I’m grateful that I was able to find this path to fulfilling work where I make a difference in people’s lives everyday and where the patient’s themselves have amazing stories to share with me. And I’m happy that I’ve gotten to the point where my exam room is a place of peaceful serenity. I make it a point to win over every patient, even the ones who enter my room already slightly disgruntled, and I love being able to turn it around! I consider it a tiny win for the day. Most people who come in with a negative attitude are hurting a little bit themselves and as an optometrist I consider myself a healer and I need to diffuse it and let them know that they don’t need to be on guard when in my chair. I’m going to be doing this (god willing) for many years to come, might as well make the most it and have some fun as well! What do you love about Optometry? What do we need to do to make sure that all 300 million Americans get their eyes examined? Grateful for all the support I’ve had through these 4 years. My parents have really given their entire lives to supporting us in any way possible and it’s been such a driving force to be able to support them back. My siblings and extended family have been volunteering to help too. @fatimaalee has been patiently waiting for me to come home and was my loudest cheerleader throughout; for that I love her very much.
