Insecurity paired with fight state in a power breed doglike a Rottweiler is a dangerous combination. To the untrained eye, this dog may appear to be a mean and confident dog. The reality is that this is false confidence. As @cesarsway always puts it, aggression is the outcome ofa problem. The problem here is insecurity that the dog is dealing with by using a fight state out of fight, flight, avoidance or acceptance. The dog also did not have a human to take the leadership position to teach the dog that fight state is not an acceptable way to deal with fear. A leader must be able to help a dog at young age overcome fear by not feeling sorry for the dog or nurturing the insecurity. The leader must provide protection from things the dog sees as a threat while also directing the dog on how to handle situations that make the dog fearful. We also have to make sure we fulfill the dogs instinctual needs before our emotional needs. As a puppy most people waste this imprint period when behaviors, the one seen here, can be prevented. Now that the dog has chosen fight state to deal with fear, to help this dog I must teach him that fight state will not work to send me away.  This dog has likely had many instances where he went to fight state and sent humans away. In his mind, this behavior works and if it’s working, there’s no need to come up with a different solution. Once this guy realized he couldn’t send me away with aggression in a fight state, his true colors came out. He was fearful and nervous to be around me. Fight state no longer worked and I blocked flight with the leash. He went into avoidance which is good for this moment but not where we want to finish. He’s now choosing to avoid confrontation which is a great step but not where we want to finish long term as he's still tense about my presence. These cases take a long time as I need to be patient and build a relationship of trust with this dog to become the first human leader he’s ever had. Prevention is so important but even more critical with a power breed because of their sheer power. Prevention instead of Intervention!

Kennel progress from the first 3 days of Sierra being with me. Since Sierra was so committed to going after me at the drop off, I needed to keep the muzzle on her 100% of the time for the safety of myself, my roommates, and all the dogs in the household. I keep muzzles on dogs until I’m certain that I will be able to safety take it on and off. I have learned a hard lessons from taking muzzles off human aggressive cases too soon. Each video is the very first interaction each day. You see in the first video how defensive Sierra was. I was in a tough spot needing to get her out but unfortunately the leash was all the way back by Sierra so I had no choice but to invade her space and ignore her warning signals. After that every inch I pull back she gain power and chose to correct me. I had to just hold space and correct verbally to tell her that wasn’t ok. The first day we worked a lot on slowing down her mind, and working on how she needs to respond to spacial pressure which helped greatly for the next day when I was getting her out of the crate. You see today she was responding to my spacial pressure and worked to bring herself to the proper state of mind I was looking for. This makes me super happy for these two. Buddy and Kimo, two of our most tense dogs that also take a long time to build trust with, found friendship with each other. Both boys were “rescue only” from the shelter due to some serious aggression issues. Here, they’re learning new rules, life manners, house manners, relationship skills, and how to let go of their reactivity. Slowly but surely, improvement comes with persistence, dedication, and consistency. Taking nice pictures and videos of the dogs is easy and looks great , but there’s a lot more to them then just that Your dog requires everyday rules , leadership and rewards for their good behaviours and correction for their bad behaviours . Teaching your dog something as little as walking on a leash without being dragged only makes the experience for both owner and dog that much more enjoyable and also makes them look better in the public eye as a good dog and not stigmatized as “ a bad breed” . As spontaneous as Moon rocks can be , she has respect and an understanding of what I want from her which is no pulling , no walking ahead of me , but has to walk beside me while focused on my commands . You don’t need a fancy prong collar , body harness or special leash.You need to be Assertive, Patient, Consistent and Positive . I filmed this two weeks ago on Day One of the current round at California City State Prison. Heading back in to prison this morning to film the arrival of the new group of dogs...
