This is the National flower of Zimbabwe known as the Flame Lily. Stumbled upon it when I was visiting Domboshava rocks. Here are fast facts about the flower! 1.The plant’s scientific name is Gloriosa superba. 2.The flower can vary in color from a dark pink/red, red through to yellow and orange & is found thriving on the sparse savannah woodlands, sand dunes and grassland in sandy loam soil. 3.The flame lily is listed as a protected plant under the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Act, so unlicenced cultivation, harvesting and trade in it is illegal. The law also makes it an offence to destroy, possess, or exchange the flower. 4.The plant has poisonous properties and is responsible for many deaths in livestock. All parts of the plant are extremely poisonous due to the presence of toxic alkaloids including colchicine and can be fatal if eaten. Standing before Historic Rock Art paintings at Domboshava rocks done by Bushmen during the Stone Age. Ochre and red in colour, the San made paints by mixing plant extracts, egg shell, and even blood. Fingers, porcupine quills and bird feathers were used as brushes to paint scenes.Pictures of men hunting with bows and arrows and also animals can be seen.
