Weekly groceries! Anything catch your eye . So we started this tradition a few years ago that the girls can each pick out any kind of cereal they want - ANY KIND - every summer. Just one box. So today they picked out their sugared cereal for the year - I've never even seen these and they are basically just sugar mixed with sugar and chocolate. Super healthy way to start the day . . . At least we can recycle the boxes. Maybe the plastic lining too. . . We also got soy milk to go with the cereal - we'll recycle that box too. In jars are nutritional yeast, coffee, olive oil, salt, honey, and peanut butter. In bags we've got flour, chick peas, pintos, aborio and brown rice, oats, organic chocolate chips, and raspberry yogurt covered pretzels . Also shampoo refilled in our own bottle. . Not a ton of veggies today because we've got loads of homegrown lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers right now . And a bunch of fruit as well. Beer, contact solution, olives, toilet paper, and butter-flavored coconut oil in recyclable/reusable packaging. About the butter-flavored coconut oil - we like it! So if you're looking for a plant-based, plastic-free butter, check this out. . . We shared it with grown up and kid friends in Carlsbad and everyone liked it, so I think it's a keeper. I'll try to make some butter sometimes too - I prefer the flavor of the homemade butter - but this stuff is good too and way easier. Check it out . P.s. still time to enter the giveaway! Check my previous posts for details .

Photographer Gregg Segal captured people lying in 1 week of their trash. The modern world has lost touch with waste, soon an 'out of sight, out of mind' will no longer work. Let's take control of our waste and move towards a sustainable lifestyle.

Yesterday’s farmers’ market haul. My kids rode their bikes to the market and did the shopping while I stayed home in my pajamas. We still had some vegetables on hand from last week and so didn’t need too much this week. . Last night, my daughter MK roasted half the asparagus. Tonight, she’ll sauté the Swiss chard with garlic and probably roast the remaining asparagus. We have broccoli left from last week and that will go into a stir-fry later in the week with some of the mushrooms—the kids bought button mushrooms (right bottom) and oyster mushrooms (left, in the small colander). . I hope you all had a relaxing weekend and that your week is off to a good start . #plasticfree #plasticfreeproduce #planetorplastic #beatplasticpollution #breakfreefromplastic #plasticpollution #endplasticpollution #plasticfreeliving #zerowaste #zerowasteliving #zerowastehome #intentionalliving #eatfoodnottoomuchmostlyplants #eattherainbow #farmersmarket

Welcome to Day 4 of 14 Days to Zero Food Waste! . Today’s accomplishment: Do some simple meal planning. Like all things zero-waste, a plan helps you reach your goals. You don’t need to create a complicated Excel spreadsheet detailing every morsel you’ll consume for the week—but by all means do so if you want to—just create a simple plan for the next few days or up to a week. Keep a couple of slots blank for the unexpected—a last-minute dinner invitation, a catered lunch at the office, unscheduled overtime at work and so on. . With your kitchen inventory in hand, figure out what meals you can cook with ingredients you already have. Do this before shopping for more food and you’ll basically eliminate food waste at home. Make a list of missing ingredients for the dishes you want to cook. . I bought lots of food this weekend at the farmers’ market. But I did follow a plan I had quickly made beforehand. Some of the shallots, most of the mushrooms and carrots and all of the potatoes and turnips went into a beanie shepherd's pie. I'll sauté the kale with garlic in olive oil for a side dish. My daughter MK is making a salad out of the cactus pads (nopales). The broccoli, cauliflower and spring onions will go into a stir fry. I'll roasted what's left of the asparagus and patty pan squash. I eat the avocados with my homemade kimchi (so good!). We've polished off most of the fruit except the watermelon. And we've eaten most of the sugar snap peas raw (so sweet!). I think I've covered everything here... . My current small assortment of ferments: a mixture of green and red cabbage which I hope will turn into a pretty and delicious sauerkraut. I also fermented some leftover cucumbers a few weeks ago and a big piece of fresh ginger (which I wanted to pickle with vinegar and sugar first). ⏺ Do you regularly ferment anything? ⏺Here are some thoughts on fermenting by Michael Pollan from the foreword of Sandor Katz' 'Art of Fermentation': "[...] an act as quotidian and practical as making your own sauerkraut represents nothing less than a way of engaging with the world. Or rather, with several different worlds, each nested inside the other: the invisible world of fungi and bacteria; the community in which you live; and the industrial food system that is undermining the health of our bodies and the land." #zerowaste #zerodechet #müllfrei #lesswaste #plasticfree #plastikfrei #fermented #fermentiert #milchsauer #probiotic #foodwaste #michaelpollan #sandorkatz #preserve #vegan #vegatarian #local #saarbrücken #saarland #karlsruhe #stuttgart #eatfoodnottoomuchmostlyplants #realfood

This weekend’s farmers’ market haul. . Strawberries are back! The vendor puts these out in baskets and, when I have my jars, I dump them into those and hand back the baskets. Caught off guard this week—I did not expect to find berries!—I had only produce bags so I carefully filled up one and put that in a shopping bag by itself so that no other produce would squish the berries and render jam on my way home. . Silly laws vary from state to state, but from what vendors here have told me here in Northern California, they can reuse the berry baskets in their booth as long as those baskets have not LEFT the booth. So, when I hand my baskets back, the vendor can refill them right there on the spot. Now, if I bring the baskets home and then return them later, the vendor has to steam them with some expensive piece of equipment that most don’t actually own, so the baskets end up being recycled rather than reused. . The asparagus pictured here also had minimal packaging—two rubber bands holding the spears together in a neat bunch. I always remove those, put the asparagus in a produce bag and then hand the rubber bands back. The vendor always thanks me for returning these. . If you have reached the point in your zero-waste journey at which rubber bands or twist ties have become your biggest dilemma, you undoubtedly produce less waste than 99 percent of the population. So don’t worry too much about those little bits sneaking in. . Swipe to see the orange bento bag in action. Still feels good looking back to months ago when I decided to take this before photo and then start my new life style. Committed myself to the gym and cleaned up my eating habits. It’s not easy for us Moms right after a baby. Takes a year to even start to feel somewhat normal again. We run on very little sleep as it is. I made a commitment and I have never felt better. My trainer said in class this week “let’s work out the crazy” and it just felt so Right. It’s my therapy. #gymlife #momlife #eatfoodnottoomuchmostlyplants #maketimeforyou
