It’s an instrumental album and samples music including everything between jazz, soul, funk, psychedelia and hip hop, which is why it has been named one of the most important instrumental hip hop albums. ☝️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ps. If you were to think that an album composed entirely of obscure vinyl record samples and recorded with only an Akai MPC60 sampler, a turntable, and a tape recorder couldn’t influence the likes of MF Doom and Radiohead, you’d be mistaken. DJ Shadow’s debut, Endtroducing..., is the result of extended daily trips to the local record store, Rare Records, where once-beloved vinyl disks have fallen from grace and ultimately lay to rest. The most unusual records were sought after by DJ Shadow, who would eventually take them home and provide them with a second chance at glory. There is an unidentifiable spookiness to Entroducing... it’s seems alive, it can feel, and it can be felt, but it’s ultimately not alive. Endtroducing... feels like the embodiment of an inanimate object being momentarily brought to life, which is essentially what DJ Shadow has done here. He’s created a living, breathing entity out of something formerly covered in dust and left for dead. The album is a timid spirit that wants to show you all of its tricks, but not all at once; it’s a patient spirit that also rewards a patient listener. Entroducing... is the soundtrack that plays while the warped, dingy, and forgotten misfit records crawl out of their bins and come out to play after the local record shop locks up for the night. Of course, the records will ultimately retreat back to their bins by dawn, but they won’t let their former spark go forgotten; this is their time to shine once again. • Endtroducing... is a true love letter, not only to the art of record collecting, but to music itself. Absolutely essential. It’s quickly emerging as one of my favorite instrumental albums of all time. What’s your favorite instrumental album? if #Endtroducing isn’t a #TTLessential, we don’t know what is. #DJShadow’s debut LP encompasses nearly the entire Lab formula on one record: scratching, rare groove, complaining about hip hop, dad jokes, krautrock, Twin Peaks, Moroder, Metallica, Bjork! here's our vintage Lab review from 2005: the full-length that established DJ Shadow as ‘the Jimi Hendrix of the sampler’ (what does that even mean) is still an eminently impressive production debut, almost 10 years later. everyone knows it was made entirely out of samples, but at the core of this album, each track transcends this limitation and becomes something truly new, making it a desert island pick. ‘Building Steam With a Grain of Salt’ has a crazy drum breakdown, ‘Number Song’ is based off a Metallica sample, ‘Changeling’ is in like 3/7 time, ‘Midnight In a Perfect World’ is a genre-defining masterstroke, and ‘What Does Your Soul Look Like Pt. 1’ is the elegant capstone on the whole affair. If you were to ask me if this album is a must-own, I would stamp my fist into an open palm and screech ‘Yessssss!’ essential listening. ╲➸link in bio╲@djshadow #TTLessentials
