Catch a glimpse of Victorian life at this 'conserved as found' country house. Brodsworth Hall was built and the pleasure gardens laid out, in the 1860s, as an up-to-date new home for the Thellusson family and their servants. It survived with remarkably few changes until taken on by English Heritage in 1990. The gardens have been restored, and the faded and worn interiors gently conserved, telling the story of the changing fortunes of the people who lived and worked here.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #englishheritage #brodsworth #brodsworthhallandgardens #heritage #history #estate #countryhouse #culture #uk #britain #conservation #charity #englishheritagesites

Intricate details in the stonework of Wenlock Priory in Shropshire.⠀ The tranquil ruins of Wenlock Priory stand in a picturesque setting on the fringe of beautiful Much Wenlock. An Anglo-Saxon monastery was founded here in about 680 by King Merewalh of Mercia, whose abbess daughter Milburge was hailed as a saint. Her relics were miraculously re-discovered here in 1101, attracting both pilgrims and prosperity to the priory.⠀ ⠀ By then Wenlock had been re-founded by the Normans as a priory of Cluniac monks. It is the impressive remains of this medieval priory which survive today, everywhere reflecting the Cluniac love of elaborate decoration. Parts of the great 13th century church still stand high.⠀ ⠀ Much Wenlock was also the home of Dr. William Penny Brookes (1809-95), originator of the still-continuing Wenlock Olympian Games, a major inspiration for the modern International Olympics.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #englishheritage #wenlock #wenlockpriory #priory #shropshire #history #heritage #culture #heritage #uk #england #britain #uk #visitbritain #england #historicplaces #historicproperties #details #charity #conservation #englishheritagesites

250 years after the man who gave his name to them was born, here's a history of the humble welly boot! You can see this pair of Wellington’s boots, designed and worn by the Duke himself, on display at Walmer Castle in Kent. ⠀ ⠀ In the 1790s, officers in the British Army wore boots called ‘Hessians’. Made of soft, highly polished calfskin, they were knee high with a curved top and decorated with a tassel. Trouble was, they weren’t easy to wear with lightweight linen trousers that were fashionable at the time. Step forward Arthur Wellesley, then Viscount Wellington, who asked his shoemaker to reinvent the boot. George Hoby, of St James’s Street, London, duly obliged, removing the tassel and cutting the boots lower.⠀ ⠀ Even before his great victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, Wellington was something of a style icon. His victory at the Battle of Vittoria in 1813 led others to start wearing these new-style boots, which became known as ‘Wellingtons’. Wellingtons remained fashionable until the Duke of Wellington’s death in 1852 but were finally superseded by the ankle boot several years later. Senior officers in the British Army still wore them for service in the Crimea and the First World War.⠀ ⠀ Meanwhile, in 1856, the North British Rubber Company (now Hunter) started to make Britain’s first rubber or ‘gum’ boots. The Duke’s patriotic pull on consumers soon saw them renamed Wellingtons. In 1916, the company was commissioned to produce millions of pairs as standard winter kit for soldiers to prevent trenchfoot and from farms to festivals, nowadays wellies are never far away! ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #englishheritage #walmercastle #kent #wellington #wellingtonboot #wellyboot #dukeofwellington #boots #history #heritage #culture #uk #england #britain #greatbritain #charity #conservation #onthisday #englishheritagesites

Thanks to #englishheritage there is a beautiful place see when you #visitengland now and forever (we hope) #Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire and is frequented by thousands every year. Including me! ☀️ As a result of the recent discovery of a vast number of burials around the site (over 200 are estimated to be in the area), a new theory has emerged that Stonehenge was a place to celebrate the lives of the dead. For sure it has nothing to do with the #druids as it predates them significantly. Though it is a romantic notion... ☀️ The reason so many thought Stonehenge was associated with druids, besides romanticising everything, is that each year, on the longest day of the year, the sun always rises over the Heel Stone at Stonehenge – a single large sarsen stone which stands outside of the main monument. And the sun always sets over the Heel Stone on the shortest day of the year. ☀️ Whatever the reason, you should come and #visitstonehenge the next time you visit England and take them in in person! ☀️ #travelblogger #uktravelblogger #travelblog #blogtravel #travelgrammer #travelwriter #travelporn #mytravelgram #girlswhotravel #ladiesgoneglobal #womenwhoexplore #iamatraveller #travelbloggersuk #travel✈️ #travelblogging #traverse19 #englishheritagesites #englishheritagesite #stonehengerocks
