MOUNTAIN SANDWICH . Just spent three days foraging in the San Juan Mountains for my PhD research. . Sweet cicely, bluebells, Solomon’s seal, white and purple violets, wild parsley, elm, pine, spruce and osha! Such abundance is happening in the Rockies right now. . Here is a picture of a wild sandwich made in the field with elm leaf and bluebell root sun bread topped with a wild plant panoply. . It is amazing how little food you need when eating wild. For someone who loses her shit when “hangry,” nibbling flowers, roots and leaves on the trail keeps you awake, alive and satiated for an impressive amount of time. Let the Northern Canadian mandrake growing experiments begin. Long-term goal: breeding a cold-hardy variety at sea level and see if the cold affects the medicinal alkaloid content. Nerd level: pretty high, but I’m okay with it. I’ve already made progress on cold hardy datura inoxia and stramonium. Connecting with other growers is key! This mandrake grower’s guide from the hay day of Mandrake House Herbs in the UK is sadly out of print. It is the best info I’ve found next to @strictlymedicinalseeds who recently published a blog post with great mandrake growing info. Lets talk plants, in particular ethnobotanical plants. There are many plants on this earth that some contolling conservative nazi decided to make illegal, because they claim its 'dangerous'.. well i say all nature should be legal! If its actually dangerous, a simple warning should be sufficient. As adult humans living our own lives, we have a right to explore what plants or fungi we choose. Almost all of these plants have medicinal properties, whether its physical or psychological, if used correctly. Some of these illegal plants, such as the most famous, cannabis, is incredibly safer than legal drugs like alcohol. Yet so many people deny this as they reach for their fourth cup of wine while eating McDonalds. I say harm reduction is the key to safe use. I hope one day in Australia we are not run by such close minded conservatives, and humanity can evolve in the right direction. Here's an interesting example.. The flower im holding is a Brugsmansia flower, also known as angles trumpet, which is in the same family as Datura, a well known powerful psychoactive plant, yes its a drug, and you know what, its legal to cultivate! Furthermore, its also known as one of the most poisonous plants grown in regular gardens! It comes with a warning lable, harm reduction, its simple really. This plant is also responsible for thousands of hospitalization cases. I personally just wonder why this is legal and cannabis not? For the record, i would NOT eat this flower and i dont really smoke cannabis, unless i was in serious pain after a dentist visit or something. Everything in moderation i say.
